I've got no interest in taking on bad contracts. I'm more talking about cap-strapped teams that might be willing to trade an asset in the form of a contributing player in exchange for cap flexibility next summer. Hawks should find themselves in the middle of a playoff chase around the trade deadline next season so maybe they use plumlee's contract to sweeten a deal. It's not like it would be an albatros for the receiving team given it would expire 2 months later.
And, btw, I'm not against signing VC. I'd love for him to be back if there's room. I'm just not sure there's going to be room and don't see TS buying out plumlee to make room. Could be wrong though. Should be a fascinating summer.
The issue here is roster spots, and personally, I'd rather have Vince than Plumlee if it came down to it, future trade options be damned

Plumlee's value in a trade is cap relief and filler. Both of those. For example, if you wanted to trade for someone with a $13M salary from a team that is over the cap, you can't just trade them a draft pick. You need to give up a similar amount of salary. That is the filler part of his value. The relief part of his value is that his contract is expiring. So, for example, if a team has decided to move on from someone like the Celts decide that they will run Brown and Tatum on the wings and are ready to get something for Gordon Hayward. You are going to have to pony up some serious filler to make the trade happen (assuming we aren't that far under the cap) and Plumlee lets the Celtics get immediate cap relief once the season is over, which has real value.
Because his contract is expiring, Plumlee should be at his maximum value this season. It is why we've been holding him for a couple of years.
