Collins is a spare part in this team. Hope your GM is aware of that. If you don't get Zion you can dable with Collins. Zion is a 4 in the NBA as is Collins. They are not complimentary pieces. In the scale of great NBA skills you have 2 great shooters and passers for position in Young and Huerter. That is what you should build on.
Do you, as a Warriors fan, think Schlenk would take more than a season or two to recognize the flaw in that approach? Think Hawks could get commensurate talent in a Collins trade? Should the team wait until he signs an extension and matching salary becomes easier for trading partners?
I think Collins has more value now thanhe will ever have in the future. His extension is not worth it if you give up cap flexibility and if he doesnt develope. To much risk if you get Zion. Probably eaven if you dont get him. Its probably better to trade him so you can get Brandon Clarke just to take time with this team than to extend him. I am just pesimistic that he will develope in the right way that he wont hinder this teams potential.
Trae has such high offensive potential that you can live with other pieces that dont fit perfectly. But to maximize him and take this team to perenisl contenders for years to come you cant sign bad contracts all be it for productive players as Collins. If Collins could play the 5 in any semblance you go with him but he just cant.
I always use Denver as an example. They played Torey Craig heavily in this playoffs. Didn't have to if you drafted OG Anunoby and where decisive with your moves when you needed to make them. Although young, Denver has lowerd their defensive and offensive ceilling for years to come .
