Davis is a top player in this league, but the cost of acquisition, you'd have to set the bar at championship or the trade is a failure.
Btw, the end results is really all that matters especially in a sitution like this definitely not "ooooh, i cant believe we got him".
Hell, if we offer Mitch, the youngsters and 3-4 picks, we didnt win a bidding war. We overpaid despite how much of a talent he is.
Set that bar for a championship.
Focus on the end results.
Do all of that when he has a good roster.
You’re doing it when his team is relying on Elfrid Payton and Wesley Johnson. That’s the difference.
You think it’s an overpay. Agree to disagree b/c there are def teams that can blow that meh offer out the water. But even if we followed your idea that it’s an overpay, you’re overpaying for a top 5 talent, a two way monster, entering his prime, while pairing him with hopefully two top tier guys to maximize their championship window while they’re in their back end of their primes.
You’re going to love him.
Just supposed to be overjoyed just for the acquisition? Nope.
I've seen players with mediocre rosters get to playoffs multiple times.
Garnett yearly did it, the west was tough then too. Probably tougher.
Melo did it as well, he, for the most part lost to the eventually champs. Even Pau was making regular playoff appearances as the lone fella.
Look, Davis is a top talent, haven't said otherwise. ironically some would disagree. The posts are there. We have several whole threads where offering up Mitch is too much. So yes, many do think there is an overpay amount.
Ironically, had the Knicks landed the 1st, you even admitted yourself you wouldn't want to make the deal. That's quite odd because as good I do think Zion would be, shouldn't a team with davis, KD and Kyrie win a title before that happens? At least one.
Hopefully Perry doesnt share your thoughts and knows too much is too much at some point.
Garnett missed the playoffs 3 straight years before he went to BOS.
Pau missed the playoffs the year before he was traded to Lal and was on his way to missing it again till he was traded mid season.
Melo’s rosters were way better than the NOP roster.
Set that bar for a championship.
Focus on the end results.

No one said be overjoyed just b/c we trade for him. This is about championships in the scenario of us picking 3rd and signing two top tier FAs who have smaller championship window.
It’s not irony when you would have a different strategy for a different situation. It’s logical. Hopefully Perry thinks this way instead of a one track mind. If we got Zion, I’d take a different approach. I think Zion plus the kids plus the assets plus KD & Kyrie put us in just a good a situation as having AD. As someone posted regarding KD and one of those 3 scenarios, I’d have a different approach.
That’s just smart roster construction. You make decisions based on what happens.
