Klay, Cousins, Cook, and Bell are all UFA. They will have a little money without Durant and Klay on the books but you have to think they give Klay his $30M a year anyway and then that's a rap for their cap space.
2 Top Tier Free Agents that they would have loved to and done anything to try to keep are now going to miss what is most likely the entire season next year......and no one knows if they will ever be the players they once were when they do return from injury. So as GS, do you roll the dice and pay them....or even one of them, pretty much giving away $30M+ a season (for each) while they sit out the entire season, or do you not offer them a deal and be stuck with a shell of a former team......while also being known as the team who dropped a very loved player once they injured themselves and pretty much ruined the rest of their career trying to save the team from the brink of elimination?
YIKES!!!
BIG YIKES!!!They are pretty screwed either way with whatever they do. I mean they almost HAVE TO let Klay and Durant walk in FA so they arnt saddled with one or both of the contracts while not knowing what the player will even look like when they return in the fall of 2020.
At the start of this thread I put out the name of Draymond to the Suns as with the thought that Durant was leaving and there cap space - they might need to rebuild the team so to speak without cap space . Now, with Klay hurt, they really should go on PAUSE for next season. But there is a possibility for them and it involves the Knicks. If the Knicks and Durant agree to a deal - maybe the Warriors can convince the Knicks to do a sign and trade and bring back a guy like Lance Thomas but also be willing to give Denadre Jordan a deal - only a year guaranteed but for like 20m. So a double sign and trade (and really what makret is there for Jordan right now). So Durant goes out and they bring back DRAFT picks - maybe a future first, a guy like Deandre, Lance Thomas and wahtever to make the math work. Its not an ideal team but this is takinga long term play and how to use Durant - if he leaves. As really, the WArriors cannot expect much from teams for Durant - not an unprotected FRP in 2020 when teams with cap space can say F You - we can sign him outright. Maybe with the Nets they use a guy like Dudley and Ed Davis - a double sign and trade for Durant. But end of the day - if Durant walks and they bring back Klay - they would be lucky to get the players I write to help their roster.
Otherwise all they would have are exceptions - especially if they don't sign Klay. Which they will.
Secondly, maybe its time to trade Draymond. Get some assets. Bring back Livingston - Iguodalas will be in his last year.
Get your draft pick from the season and the Durant trade (if he walks) , load manage the hell out of Curry next year -- and roll with a pretty average team but at least you will have cap space in the summer of 2020 to do something. I mean, they have to be careful with guys like Cook and Bell because of the long term cap with Curry and if they bring back Klay. Thats 80m bucks right there
