Money this year is better than money next year, at least as I see it.
Of course it is. But its not like teams are going to stop trying to get better, and other teams stop trying to shed money.
On the flip side of that argument, there will also be less teams with cap space next summer. So the teams looking for cap space to facilitate trades, will have to pay a steeper price because supply will down.
It’ll be less of a sellers market than you’re thinking is the point I was making, with fewer teams looking for space.
There will be fewer teams with cap space, sure, but teams still make their plans based on who they could sign, and you’re not going to get a better prize for cap space if fewer teams are in that market to bid against each other.
We don't yet know exactly what the pool will look like next summer.
With Durant and Klay getting hurt, they could easily just sign one year deals and be free agents again next summer. Its definitely possible that Kawhi signs a 1+1 type contract with Toronto, and he'll be free again next summer. Its already been reported that Anthony Davis intends to test free agency next summer.
That's 4 absolute studs that could very well be free agents next summer, with limited teams having available cap space. Am I saying Detroit could sign any of those guys, nope. But they very well could take advantage and profit from teams looking to open space.
