It wasn’t just that I don’t like Russell, and including Wiggins makes an unlikely acquisition even less probable. It wasn’t even about the young assets we’d need to give up, even though MIN needs development at multiple positions.
The relief I felt was that in this situation, if Russell returns to his normal production of his first three years, he becomes one of the top 15 worst contracts in the NBA on a 4-5 year max deal. We know with Wiggins about the damage having even one bad max contract like this can do to a team. Two bad max contracts, locking out $60 mil a year for four years, would be a franchise killer.
I’m not trying to hurt your enthusiasm here. If we end up with him, I’ll cheer for him and hope I’m wrong. But I want everyone to consider the size of the consequences if it goes bad. We’d be in cap hell for another 4 years.
I respect your opinion Shrink, you know Im on board for getting Dlo from the first rumors I heard, and I certainly think the topic is worth discussion. Time will tell both, if is a good signing and if actually happens. However, I dont think we must consider Wiggins deal to sign or not Dlo.
First, Wiggins never had a season as good as Dlo had the last year. We paid Wiggins not for the "good year he had", but because "he would work hard to improve". When a NBA player has a very good year as a 23 YO, and specially a PG with 30 USG%, its likely it wasnt a fluke but a leap. Risks are always there, injuries, off the court issues, etc, but a player prime, specially one that bases his game on skill and not phyisical exuberance, is around 27 years old. Even if he isnt worth a max, IMO it will be a slight overpay. If you certainly think that Teague is worthy of a 19M contract, dont you think that Dlo value moving forward is close or above to that number?
Second, Stay pat doing nothing is also a risk. If we have a real chance to get DLo for some protected 1sts and 2nds and choose to stay pat instead, go into the season and miss the playoffs, pick a guard next season who isnt a generational talent, takes 2 or 3 seasons to develop, we could be waiving good bye to KAT for then. How we are going to get out of cap hell without trading talent or future assets?
As for the rumored proposed trade for Wiggins that Doogie Wolfson said... I like Doogie, he has been a beat reporter for long time and an informed opinion, but I dont really trust on him having insight to the actual decision makers. Rosas is new in town, as is the whole FO, and reportedly tight lipped. I actually think, that if we get Dlo, the next move is convice Taylor Wiggins time has passed up and he could be more willing to do so with another high caliber young player in the roster.
