2019 - 2021 Free-Agents

I've been thinking for a while that the Clippers are the mystery team in the Al Horford sweepstakes. The fact that there is still a mystery team supposedly in the hunt combined with our organization's penchant for keeping things close to the vest seems to line up with that correlation. Horford's camp has been setting up meetings to see if they can find another team to pay enough of a premium to entice him to sign elsewhere in a situation less conducive to winning by apparently even leaking that 4-year, $112-million figure.

Then there was talk of Kawhi's preference to team up with Jimmy Butler and the Clippers exploring the feasibility of signing Butler in free agency. Why would there be a need for such investigation when we can just dump Gallo in a trade or even utilize the stretch provision in order to sign both Kawhi and Butler outright? After all, Butler has been known to be thirsting for L.A.

It's likely because the Clippers front office is trying to build their own Big 3 entirely through free agency and possibly with a sign-and-trade of Danilo Gallinari. I believe the Celtics still hold Horford's Bird rights, so a S&T deal with them using Gallo could make it possible to fit him along with the outright signings of Kawhi and Butler. However, it would also depend on Horford's willingness to take significantly less than a max amount in order to come over. I believe another less feasible option would be to use the S&T option in dealing Gallo to the Sixers for Butler and signing Horford along with Kawhi.

If this, in fact, is the Clippers' plan, I can't say I would object to it, especially since I voted for all three in this thread's poll with such expectations. I still want a future first-round pick in return, but that may be too optimistic given the delicate dependence on multiple teams' willingness to participate. I also don't want to have to include significant assets in order to make this happen and I fear we may have to.

Clippers would have to sign Horford and sign-and-trade for Butler. Anything else severely destroys the Clippers depth, plus Butler would have to take less than the max.

Since Durant's announcing tonight, I guess he's staying with the Warriors, then? Can't imagine any other reason why he'd announce now without even taking any meetings with other teams.

I agree with this sentiment. I've felt for a while now that we should be first-class fans, unlike our neighbors across the hall, mostly because we now have a first-rate owner and organization. If it doesn't happen this season, it will happen eventually. Yes, I know the wait has been agonizing lo these many years, but we have legitimate hope now.
