Then there was talk of Kawhi's preference to team up with Jimmy Butler and the Clippers exploring the feasibility of signing Butler in free agency. Why would there be a need for such investigation when we can just dump Gallo in a trade or even utilize the stretch provision in order to sign both Kawhi and Butler outright? After all, Butler has been known to be thirsting for L.A.
It's likely because the Clippers front office is trying to build their own Big 3 entirely through free agency and possibly with a sign-and-trade of Danilo Gallinari. I believe the Celtics still hold Horford's Bird rights, so a S&T deal with them using Gallo could make it possible to fit him along with the outright signings of Kawhi and Butler. However, it would also depend on Horford's willingness to take significantly less than a max amount in order to come over. I believe another less feasible option would be to use the S&T option in dealing Gallo to the Sixers for Butler and signing Horford along with Kawhi.
If this, in fact, the Clippers' plan, I can't say I would object to it, especially since I voted for all three in this thread's poll with such expectations. I still want a future first-round pick in return, but that may be too optimistic given the delicate dependence multiple teams' willingness to participate. I also don't want to have to include significant assets in order to make this happen and I fear we may have to.
