We couldn't stay over the cap and maneuver with exceptions, etc. We didn't stay under the cap to take assets/picks back in trades like MEM did. We could have Philly by the balls right now with DAL trying to throw a wrench in the Butler trade. We screwed Baynes. And apparently pissed off, or at least irked, one of the most likeable guys in the league (Al).
And, the biggest issue is, as of now, we can't play our 5 best players together. So, once again we ship Marcus or Jaylen back to the bench. Or Gordon is staying there, which means we're even more incredibly small. We say the future of the team is Jaylen & Jayson developing, yet now we take the ball out of their hands for another season (or 4). And we ensure that one of them, probably Jaylen, isn't going to close every game. So, we'll go another season and not really know if we should pay Jaylen big money after it.
Maybe we get lucky and sign a few young bigs around Timeload and they all develop. Maybe we trade Jaylen for a young big like Sabonis or Isaac to go alongside Timelord. Maybe Jaylen takes a team-friendly extension in the fall. I know it's early and lots can happen. But, if they don't we just gave a max to a guy nobody else was lining up to give it to who will take the ball out of our only current path back to contention.
I think you're worrying a bit too much about it. It'll be surprising how much better this team plays. Also," moves that don't make sense that set up other moves" is very true here make no mistake. There's something else coming, either in the short term or mid season or next season, but something is going down.
Oh, I don't doubt the team will be really good, even without that next move. And I get the concept of grab an all-nba player when they're available. But we have a definite ceiling - and lack of fit again. Which is odd to say since kemba will be a better fit than Kyrie. But, no matter how seamless that goes, we're stacking scoring wings & little scoring guards for days and can't play them all. We made a move that necessitates that next move. And, I know they know that (lol)... but with the contracts available to trade, it's going to be tough.
I'm definitely not in the Fire Danny crowd or anything like that. Have been with him on pretty much every move so far. and have faith he'll do something to fix this, etc. But, I think this is a time I would have preferred a different tact. Can't wait to be proven wrong by the next move.
