The FO said it would not pay a ransom for players who were going to be FAs the following year. Thankfully, we learned our lesson from 2010. If AD really wants to come here, especially after one year in LA LA LAND, then great. That way (1) we don't give up anything much less a huge haul, and (2) we get this season to see how our kids have developed; who stays and who goes. Win-Win.
It would be nice if you could backup what you are saying with FO evidence/sources. There is so much stories out there I just don't know what to believe as to why the Knicks weren't able to trade for AD. I had to go check again. All I'm reading is the Knicks didn't make a formal offer for Anthony Davis. Either they weren't willing to give up the necessary assets or they didn't have enough. Were they even willing to offer Mitch and RJ plus picks? If I had to guess base on what I'm reading, the Knicks were unwilling to do what the Lakers did to get AD. And getting 1 superstar could mean more will follow sooner rather than later.

I'm not going to do your research for you. No, the Knicks were not going to give up Mitch. I just laid out the entire picture for you. Why would give up all those assets when you just get him the following season when he's an UFA?
Just relax and watch things unfold.

Well you'd get him because it prevents him from spending a year in LA and having the Lakers sell him on staying. It also means you probably guarantee Durant comes. And possibly Irving too in that case.
But that being said, the best thing that can happen now as far as we're concerned is Kawhi doesn't go to the Lakers, they have a tumultuous season, our kids play well and show promise, and then AD bolts and signs with us.
Those are a lot of variables that we don't control however... which is why you don't leave it up to chance and just trade for him. But I'm not that upset we didn't do it cause I'm not crazy about giving up all those assets. I really think Mitch can be special.
