Shams: Heat interested in Chris Paul

Post#1 » by ThunderBolt » Mon Sep 23, 2019 3:33 pm

From the Athletic article today-

The Heat have a level of interest in Oklahoma City’s Chris Paul entering the NBA season, league sources said. Paul had shared a strong mutual interest in ending up in Miami after his trade to the Thunder — but the sides could not agree to a deal and now OKC is prepared for Paul to enter training camp as a veteran star and leader. Paul has three years and $124 million left on his deal. Miami will likely elect to see how it starts the season before gauging a new pursuit of Paul, which would take several large contracts to match salary.

The Heat have a level of interest
That level of interest could be between 0 and some positive number.

And as before, the question remains how many 1sts the Thunder are prepared to add to CP3 to dump him.

I could see it happening. Riley doesn't seem to care much about the distant future. CP3 would firmly put them in the playoffs and make them a little dangerous in the playoffs.

That number is exactly 0. I think OKC is completely prepared to play with Paul this season if nobody wants to take him off their hands

well, aside from the top 3 teams (Phily, Milly, Boston) the East is wide open, getting Paul means the Heat are probably the 4th best team in that conference. if they can get a top 4 seed who knows what can happen.

I imagine a big reason why the Heat are interested in dealing for Paul is the possibility of getting one of their picks back. The Thunder own their 2021 and 2023 1st round picks. If I were the Heat I'd hold out until OKC is willing to attach their 2023 pick.

I think a good compromise would be for CP3 to opt out of that final year of his contract and then the teams can make some type of even trade. If CP3 ever wants to go to a team where he can compete again, he’ll probably need to do that anyway. Would it be against the rules for him to agree to opt out and then officially agree to a lower amount for that final year, or no? Would he just have to opt out and trust them? I’m pretty sure I read that he can officially opt out now - doesn’t need to wait till years from now.

I'd say aside from the top 2 teams. And with Embiid's injury history (i know Paul aint exactly an ironman), you never know. Bucks lack real top end talent besides Giannis; getting Paul gives you a shot. Not a great shot, but some small chance

I would rather wait for better trade opportunities, or for free agency, where Miami will have an advantage over most of the other teams. Chris Paul contract is terrible, and he isn't good enough to make them a contender, even in the east.

That 2021 pick is unprotected; i cant see the Thunder giving it up. The 2023 pick is lotto protected, iirc. Even then, giving any assets to move Paul would be odd from the Thunder. Theyre not in the tax, paying him doesnt hurt their bottom line and he's not a cancer. He's a well respected leader in the league.

Miami has enough bad contracts that they could move to get this done and would leave them in a better place then they are now in. Ino it's the 3rd yr of the deal that is the sticking point because they wanna be players in FA in 2yrs time, but what's the cap hold of Paul + Butler + Bam + Herro ?? Won't they still have space to go pick up someone in FA with just those guys under contract ??

This reads more like 'Heat blinked first" then 'Thunder are desperate and will add picks'.

Zach Lowe just said he's flirting with predicting (with the current roster) Miami as the #3 seed from Howard Beck's podcast yesterday(The First 48). He's still leaning Celtics as the #3 but says he likes Miami and is inching towards predicting them 3rd.

On CP3, I think he'd make Miami better by running the offense and understanding Butler's the #1 option, the question is the value of CP3 vs his contract, CP3s still really good but his contract isn't and it's quite restrictive for the future.

wait for FA as in waste this year? and Miami is maxed out so they can't sign anyone in FA. and they don't have to give up much for Paul other than match salary.
