I was not around for the game yesterday but I can't get over 3 of the things I ended up reading that were said (probably more but I have a poor memory and a lot going on). Forgive me for going here.
- Someone mentioned yesterday they knew they should have moved on from Gould. What?!?!?!? And done what in the moment? To that person - what was your FA wish list at kicker and what was your plan in the moment? (Notice how I ask "in the moment" because I highly doubt there were any informed or uninformed fans who were screaming for the 49ers to go out and sign a guy like Joey Slye before the Panthers did when the Panthers acknowledged he was just going to be a camp leg for them).
In FA, your options were Jason Myers, Stephen Gostkowski (who the 49ers actually flirted with to some degree during the Gould drama), Matt Bryant (had retired and wasn't leaving the area), Chandler Catanzaro, Mike Nugent, Dan Bailey, Cairo Santos, and Cody Parkey. Those are the guys that were available at the time who ended up signing deals elsewhere. Everyone else is still available.
To that person or people, were you a fan of Matt Gay or Austin Seibert in the draft? Those are the two options that were taken with a draft pick this year. Matt Gay has missed two kicks (one game winner - a 34-yarder) and two extra points. Albeit, that's better than Gould percentage wise so far. Seibert has missed 2 extra points and attempted 8 kicks in 6 games (only 3 above 40 yards).
Maybe you liked one of those guys very much. I don't know. Maybe you WOULD have looked highly intelligent had you spotted a diamond in the rough option that I'm not sure exists (point it out to me) and the 49ers kicking situation would have been better so far this year than it has been. I don't know but I kind of doubt it and I kind of question what you or others thought was available to them.
Was it the idea of dedicating that much cash against the cap to Gould? Gould counts 1.69% against the 49ers cap this year - 7th highest in the NFL. The cheapest kicker in the league counts 0.21% of the cap this year. That's a 1.48% difference between Gould and the cheapest kicker in the NFL.

There's a ton of numbers from yesterday I could point out to and I'm not sure the one that stuck with me is even the best one but it's one that stuck in my mind for a while after I saw it. That was the Rams -12 yards in the 2nd half when there was still 13 minutes left in the 4th quarter. That is amazing to me even if you factor everything the Rams have been through this year. Ridiculously good.

Lastly, I have bashed the guy for a very long time and have continued to say I would move on from him if it were me BUT Saleh's celebrations in games, especially yesterday, are/were absolutely outstanding. Inject THAT in to me before every football game I'm on the sidelines for from here on out. So good and part of the reason why I continue to say that while he wouldn't coach for me if I had the power, it's a very small part of the reason why I would LOVE to sit down with the guy and talk football over an adult beverage if I could. Really cool.
