Yeah, 4-1 is looking pretty likely all banged up on a short week on the road.

Rest up, Kittle. Don't pull a Kevin Durant or a Jerry Rice circa 1998.

I'll once again note that I haven't studied ESPN's Football Power Index to figure out what goes in to it so consider me neutral at best on this even when I eliminate my own expectations for this team, but....

ESPN Football Power Index

% chance 49ers win the division entering game - 65%
% chance Rams win the division entering game - 19%

With a 49ers win % chance to win the division - 81%
With a Rams win % chance to win the division - 29%

With a 49ers loss % chance to win the division - 53%
With a Rams loss % chance to win the division - 6%

If I'd have been forced to guess these, I'd have been way off.

Agree! Though that’ll hurt me badly in one of my fantasy team.

However, what’s the deal with Ross Dwelley!? Dude was killing during OTAs and training camp. I really want him to carry those big plays into the regular season games. I know he has a stud in front of him, so his opportunities are extremely limited. But I’m really intrigued to see what he got.

Was more skeptical of those nuggets and him converting it into regular season value than almost every other Niner off-season story that was put out there for the last several years. I don't have high hopes he does much of anything from here on out. I have higher hopes of getting SOMETHING out of Levine than Ross at this point.

Of course, I was the guy that railed continuously on Kittle before his breakout, screamed for Goedert to be drafted, and for Eifert to be signed as well so most probably don't want to listen to me talk about Niner TEs for a while on any level in any form.

Big win today.

The next 6 games, they play at Washington, Carolina, at Arizona, Seattle, Arizona, Green Bay.

If they come out of it 8-2 or better, the brain trust may have to evaluate whether the team's window is this year and the next couple of years.

They don't have too many key free agents after this season -- Breida is RFA, Armstead and Ward are UFAs. But they really have to thin about extensions for Kittle and Buckner as both will be UFAs after 2020. Several other UFAs after 2020 as well.

So if they're still one of the top NFC teams after 10 games, they have to go for it this season and next season, which might make them more inclined to look at trades.

Buckner is 25, Kittle is 26. So they can't assume that 2-3 years from now, the core players will still be still young and they can bide their time.

Jimmy is 27 and will be under contract another 3 more seasons after this one. They have to take their shots before he's due for another contract. We don't know if he's good enough to be a SB-winning QB. But QB contracts are going to continue to get ridiculous so it's going to be harder to stockpile talent 3-4 years from now.

Teams who started 5-0 - Final record - Since 1960

16-0 - One
15-1 - Five
14-2 - Ten
13-3 - Twelve
12-4 - Thirteen
11-5 - Twelve
10-6 - Eight (All made playoffs)
9-7 - One (2007 Minnesota Vikings - missed playoffs)
8-8 - Six (Two in 2009, one in 2015, and one in 2016)

13 teams have won the Super Bowl.

If 49ers get to 10-6, they could be the first 10-6 team (that started 5-0) to not make the playoffs.....maybe.

Since 1960, every team who has started 6-0 (and played in a 16 game season) has made the playoffs except for...

1978 Washington Redskins - 8-8 (Joe Theismann started 14 games)
2003 Minnesota Vikings - 9-7 (Daunte Culpepper started 14 games)
2009 Denver Broncos - 8-8 (Kyle Orton started 15 games)

*So, every team that has started 6-0 AND kept their original starting QB healthy for the entire season has made the playoffs (since 1960).

I was not around for the game yesterday but I can't get over 3 of the things I ended up reading that were said (probably more but I have a poor memory and a lot going on). Forgive me for going here.

- Someone mentioned yesterday they knew they should have moved on from Gould. What?!?!?!? And done what in the moment? To that person - what was your FA wish list at kicker and what was your plan in the moment? (Notice how I ask "in the moment" because I highly doubt there were any informed or uninformed fans who were screaming for the 49ers to go out and sign a guy like Joey Slye before the Panthers did when the Panthers acknowledged he was just going to be a camp leg for them).

In FA, your options were Jason Myers, Stephen Gostkowski (who the 49ers actually flirted with to some degree during the Gould drama), Matt Bryant (had retired and wasn't leaving the area), Chandler Catanzaro, Mike Nugent, Dan Bailey, Cairo Santos, and Cody Parkey. Those are the guys that were available at the time who ended up signing deals elsewhere. Everyone else is still available.

To that person or people, were you a fan of Matt Gay or Austin Seibert in the draft? Those are the two options that were taken with a draft pick this year. Matt Gay has missed two kicks (one game winner - a 34-yarder) and two extra points. Albeit, that's better than Gould percentage wise so far. Seibert has missed 2 extra points and attempted 8 kicks in 6 games (only 3 above 40 yards).

Maybe you liked one of those guys very much. I don't know. Maybe you WOULD have looked highly intelligent had you spotted a diamond in the rough option that I'm not sure exists (point it out to me) and the 49ers kicking situation would have been better so far this year than it has been. I don't know but I kind of doubt it and I kind of question what you or others thought was available to them.

Was it the idea of dedicating that much cash against the cap to Gould? Gould counts 1.69% against the 49ers cap this year - 7th highest in the NFL. The cheapest kicker in the league counts 0.21% of the cap this year. That's a 1.48% difference between Gould and the cheapest kicker in the NFL.

----------------

There's a ton of numbers from yesterday I could point out to and I'm not sure the one that stuck with me is even the best one but it's one that stuck in my mind for a while after I saw it. That was the Rams -12 yards in the 2nd half when there was still 13 minutes left in the 4th quarter. That is amazing to me even if you factor everything the Rams have been through this year. Ridiculously good.

-------------------

Lastly, I have bashed the guy for a very long time and have continued to say I would move on from him if it were me BUT Saleh's celebrations in games, especially yesterday, are/were absolutely outstanding. Inject THAT in to me before every football game I'm on the sidelines for from here on out. So good and part of the reason why I continue to say that while he wouldn't coach for me if I had the power, it's a very small part of the reason why I would LOVE to sit down with the guy and talk football over an adult beverage if I could. Really cool.

One thing the 49ers couldn't stop was the end around or reverse to the WRs.

Turay is out for the year, Matthews is out a month, and Mayowa has played 86 snaps in 5 games (Ford has played 118 in 5).
