Game Thread: Hawks vs 76ers -- 10/28

Two teams have tried and failed. Now the Philadelphia 76ers get their opportunity to stop Atlanta point guard Trae Young.

The Sixers visit the Hawks on Monday and will try to slow down the mercurial second-year player, who has scored 77 points in the first two games.

The Sixers have benefited from the addition of free agent Al Horford, who began his career with the Hawks. Philadelphia signed Horford to help boost the team's production when Joel Embiid is unable to play. That didn't take long. Embiid missed the second game of the season with a right ankle injury and Horford responded with 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Atlanta had great success against Philadelphia in 2018-19, winning three of the four meetings during the regular season, twice in the last two weeks before the Sixers began a playoff run that landed them in the Eastern Conference finals.

After a win in Detroit that felt more satisfying than the 6-point margin of victory would lead you to believe, the Sixers headed down south and will take on the Atlanta Hawks tonight at State Farm Arena. The Sixers look to hand a young Hawks team their first loss of the season after the Hawks defeated the Detroit Pistons in their season opener, and then squeaked out a win over everyone’s former favorite son, Markelle Fultz, and the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.

At the time of this writing, Joel Embiid is listed as questionable for tonight’s game. As we saw against the Pistons, this is not as much of a death sentence as it had been in the past. Tobias Harris had a 29-point offensive output against the Pistons, especially notable after a slower start in the first game of the season. Look for Harris to continue his momentum against the Hawks.

Someone's "O" must go, baybee!

Seriously though, I'm just looking for us to be competitive tonight. I'll not be upset if we're 2-2 at the end of the week, still showing progress.

Tonight is the type of night I'd want to see Young go off the way he has in games 1 and 2 considering PHI struggled to cover quick guards recently. They're a strong team though so .. whew, gonna be tough.

I agree Spud...let's talk Winning until we lose.
We played Philly well really well last year with Butler, not Butler but JRich from Miami in his place. At least we have more wing size to match up.
Reddish guarding Simmons will be interesting to see.

Trae usually kills Philly. They will be different with Horford but worse in the paint. We just need to abuse whoever they put on Trae.

That rookie from Washington. One of the best perimeter talents defensively in awhile but he will be food with Young. My guess is we will see a lot of Len screens if Horford decides to defend Collins otherwise, a lot of Collins screens. We just need to abuse their weak spots. They don't have much length when Embiid is out.

Defensively, Trae will likely guard Matisse. Which will leave Richardson to Cam and Simmons to Hunter but both can guard either player. Trae can play free satety this game on defense. Philly lacks offensive firepower when Embiid is out and they have to score based on their defense which means like v. Orlando, avoid turnovers and we should get them around 35-37% fg%. Philly shoots it worse as a group. We just need to play physical which we have with the Trae, Len, Collins and the rooks. Where we need to beat them is the bench. Like us, they can go 9-10 deep. They don't have scorers but they got guys who know their roles.

Matchup we need to dominate is Mike Scott v. Jabari Parker. We win this matchup, we likely win the game. Their 2nd unit has no one that can guard the PnR or Trae Young since Trae is playing 37mpg now. We will abuse the Burke with Bolden or O'Quinn pairing pretty bad. The bench like v. Orlando is how we will win this game

Oh Thybulle did start in the absence of Joel last game as they ran Ben/Thy/Jrich/Harris/Hor. Ok that makes sense. Man Thy put up 0 points last game so you know his only mission tonight is trying to contain Trae. Dang that’s tough.

Funny you mention our old buddy Mike Scott as I read somewhere last night he’s itching to play us and play well vs us. Probably same goes for Hor.

I’ve noticed they play a lot of high low with their bigs in Embiid and Hor, they seem to run in every which way with all their 4’s and 5’s.

Keep them out of the paint and make them do things that are uncomfortable.

If Trae was a 1v1 guy, I would worried but he is a playmaker above all else. Matisse will see that guarding these elite offensive PGs is hard af especially if they have the supporting personnel

I envisioned Josh Richardson on Trae. Seems teams are sending dudes in shifts though so surely he'll see the Washington guy too.

Thybulle is no push over. I've seen a couple games and his defensive wizard reputation is well deserved. He isn't great at staying in front of guys, but he is a master at reaching around and knocking the ball loose and also blocking shots while trailing. Trae has to be real careful with him tonight.

btw, how much of a pvssy do you have to be to have cut lip with sutures listed on the injury report. The sprained ankle I get, but if Embiid or anyone for that matter misses a game because they have a cut lip they would instantly be the biggest pvssy in professional sports.
