Dion would probably rather be listed as out than be on the bench getting a DNP. Not sure what’s going on with JJ, but somehow he still isn’t in “Heat shape” despite the fact training camp was like 3-4 weeks ago.

DJJ got that brittle body that’s gonna get banged up a lot the way he plays. Probably puts a ceiling on what you’re willing to pay him tbh.

We’ve found a lot of gems the past 2 years, but we need to be careful and not repeat history. If the price is too high on some of these guys, we need to cut bait and trust we can find other contributors the same way we found them. We can’t have another Tyler Johnson, Dion or JJ situation on our hands. It’s cap crippling.

I can forgive the Hassan one. We thought he was that dude. He wasn’t.

Not good- understandable, but franchise crippling is going way beyond the fray to characterize Dion/JJ contracts. The Hassan/Bosh contracts were franchise crippling, as all teams have 2 to 3 max slots available to them and both of our max contracts were franchise non-starters.

JJ's 16 is on the lower end of a bad contract, and Dion's 12 is mediocre. Those contracts are not breaking anyone's cap and absolutely every team has a similar contract because no market is going to be cookie cutter. I just don't get why we have to attribute our chagrins to players that negotiate decent contracts for themselves? Like, we were having this same conversation yrs ago when ppl were calling McRoberts 5 mil a crippling contract, it's ridiculous

He had a domestic violence charges that got him kicked off the Illinois basketball team. He resurfaced in Oakland University as the 2nd scorer in the nation behind Trae Young however, he was a 5h year senior after he had to sit due to transfer rules. In essence, the NBA saw an older talented player with domestic violence charges to his name. That is why he went undrafted. He decided to sign with Golden State over Miami after last season's draft and played in their G-League team but the Heat kept an eye and did their diligence on his off court issues and signed him. What is more surprising to me is that Golden State dropped the ball on signing him to one of their two-way deals. I mean, he was really good in G-League play for them.

This doesn't eeb'm push the needle for a rationalization if Nunn turns out to be an above average starter. There's literally no precedent for that, I believe, especially for an offensively talented guard in a wing oriented league. Whiteside got drafted despite being a skinny narcissist, and Lance nearly committed infanticide and ended up on somebodies draft board; we live in one of the most organized example of unfettered capitalism, that charge is lightweight(which is how he ended up mixed with the Warriors). Age ain't a big enough of a factor to keep him from being drafted either, shoot I think there were maybe 2 23 year olds drafted in the lotto this year.

Something's definitely odd about Nunn that we're missing or have missed, but he's been great. I came into the season wanting to see Jimmy/Dion/Winslow, so Nunn/Jimmy/Winslow better be the new it

Individually the Dion deal is on the low end of acceptable. He’s not a bad player, but he comes with considerable baggage. JJ’s $16m is looking pretty ugly and unmoveable at this point. Who tf knows what’s going on there.

The cap crippling comment was more as a combination (Dion $12, JJ $16, TJ $19 is more than a max contract), but yeah, was perhaps a little hyperbolic Bish ;)

Dion's issue isn't his contract but the player that shows up to work. If Dion played as well as the season he won the contract, nobody would be complaining.

And James Johnson's deal is only awful because he isn't making an effort either. Pat Riley is right about these guys. They broke their promises.

I think injuries have been the worse part, which are rarely taken into account, but yes their professionalism isn't where it could/should

Players do not promise to perform on a certain level when they sign contracts. Risks assessments is a part of FO job.

I disagree and so does Pat. There is an implicit promise to perform or at least make the best effort.

Recent grumblings suggest JJ is having a hard time staying away from mary jane.

Can we void that contract then?
