Dion would probably rather be listed as out than be on the bench getting a DNP. Not sure what’s going on with JJ, but somehow he still isn’t in “Heat shape” despite the fact training camp was like 3-4 weeks ago.
DJJ got that brittle body that’s gonna get banged up a lot the way he plays. Probably puts a ceiling on what you’re willing to pay him tbh.
We’ve found a lot of gems the past 2 years, but we need to be careful and not repeat history. If the price is too high on some of these guys, we need to cut bait and trust we can find other contributors the same way we found them. We can’t have another Tyler Johnson, Dion or JJ situation on our hands. It’s cap crippling.
I can forgive the Hassan one. We thought he was that dude. He wasn’t.

He had a domestic violence charges that got him kicked off the Illinois basketball team. He resurfaced in Oakland University as the 2nd scorer in the nation behind Trae Young however, he was a 5h year senior after he had to sit due to transfer rules. In essence, the NBA saw an older talented player with domestic violence charges to his name. That is why he went undrafted. He decided to sign with Golden State over Miami after last season's draft and played in their G-League team but the Heat kept an eye and did their diligence on his off court issues and signed him. What is more surprising to me is that Golden State dropped the ball on signing him to one of their two-way deals. I mean, he was really good in G-League play for them.

Not good- understandable, but franchise crippling is going way beyond the fray to characterize Dion/JJ contracts. The Hassan/Bosh contracts were franchise crippling, as all teams have 2 to 3 max slots available to them and both of our max contracts were franchise non-starters.
JJ's 16 is on the lower end of a bad contract, and Dion's 12 is mediocre. Those contracts are not breaking anyone's cap and absolutely every team has a similar contract because no market is going to be cookie cutter. I just don't get why we have to attribute our chagrins to players that negotiate decent contracts for themselves? Like, we were having this same conversation yrs ago when ppl were calling McRoberts 5 mil a crippling contract, it's ridiculous

And James Johnson's deal is only awful because he isn't making an effort either. Pat Riley is right about these guys. They broke their promises.

Players do not promise to perform on a certain level when they sign contracts. Risks assessments is a part of FO job.

Recent grumblings suggest JJ is having a hard time staying away from mary jane.
