Has there ever been a fall from coaching grace like Thibs? Went from hot coaching guenis to outdated fool in short order.

In football there was Chip Kelly which was a similar tale. Or Jim Harbaugh.

I think Harbaugh could easily go back to the NFL and immediately win. He just didn't get along with mgmt in SF. I was actually just thinking about this the other day. Probably when thinking Anthony Lynn made some head scratching decisions and has a team that constantly makes mistakes whether it be penalties or turnovers...until they play Jacksonville and are eliminated from the playoffs of course.

It's not a bad play by Teague. Kam is drawn out (no one at the rim), Bridges is not going to meet him at the paint (lone weakside protection), and he got a step on his defender (Ty?), who happens to be a rookie.

That's a play a point guard is trained to take. I don't see what the problem is.

He goes on to blow the layup badly. I would take my chances with a generational offensive talent like Towns than a journeyman PG like Teague.

Minnesota traded Ricky for Teague because they (Thibs, namely) were convinced they needed a shoot first point guard. They got what they longed for.

Actually it's come out that Ricky and Thibs wanted to go separate ways (it was mutual) because of difference in team philosophy. Ricky (the team leader) wanted the team to be very close, like a family, and Thibs "hates that touchy-feely crap".

I like Harbaugh quite a bit too. Spanos family want a yes man so I do not think they would appreciate a coach like Jim Harbaugh even with the success he would bring. They fired Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 control essentially because Marty was a strong willed coach.

To answer WG's question, I guess Chip Kelly fits the bill more than Harbaugh for a comparison to Thibs.

I don't think Chip Kelly does. He was great at Oregon, had like one decent year at Philly and then just kind of stunk for a couple years. Thibs was highly respected in the NBA for years and then suddenly it turned quickly and people thought the game had passed him by.

I think a good comparison that comes to mind if we have to make them would be Jeff Fischer.

Main difference though is while Fisher is a medicore coach all his players love him. Like I swear I've never heard a former player of his say one bad thing about the guy. I think that had a lot to do with him getting so many chances I think he's just a cool guy who people want around.

Chip Kelly is a good analogy. Both guys had their schematic thing that when it was the new thing did well but they never really adjusted as opponents figured them out.

Fisher was a great coach with the Titans and took them to the SB and often times had great records and playoffs. He was strictly a defensive assistant coach, like Thibs, from 95-05. Finally the Rams got him around the time offenses were changing and his defensive mentality and approach just really took him from being really a really good, solid coach, to really not having to adjust to the way the game was changing. I suppose as scheme goes you can mention Chip though, but he never really had any success at the pro level. He only made the playoffs one year and lost the first game. It was downhill from there.

There are probably better examples. Maybe Buddy Ryan for one, or maybe eve his son.
