Since signing with Denver, Millsap has averaged 12 ppg while missing double-digit games each season.

While making $30 million a year.

We dodged a bullet by letting Millsap walk.

Absolutely fantastic trade pulled off by Schlenk here. This is why you collect all of the assets you can at the beginning of the rebuild - to be able to pounce when an opportunity like this arises. This is the second time Schlenk has put his abundance of assets to use (the first being the Deandre Hunter trade up).

Capela is a top young center on a very reasonable long term contract, whom we can afford to let get healthy this year, and who only cost a mid-round draft pick in a weak draft. As someone mentioned earlier, there's a decent chance the Nets tank for that their pick this year and get KD back next year making it really weak.

This trade also makes Trae happy which is an underrated aspect of it. He gets the help he was promised in the long term. Trae is locked in for years but you never want a disgruntled superstar.

I can't overstate just how much I love this trade for you guys. You guys have underachieved big time this year from a win loss perspective compared to my preseason expectations but in the end I think it will end up being the best thing that could have happened to you. Most of the time when teams find their franchise player in the draft they try to speed up the winning process at the expense of continuing to add key young pieces around that star player. In your case I felt like that would have even been okay because of Collins, Hunter, Heurter and Reddish but you seriously lucked into some injury issues and players not quite playing up to expectations which has led to a free tank year and another likely top 5 pick. I feel like the one missing piece is another solid shot creator to help Young carry the scoring and playmaking load and LaMelo seems like he would be a damn good fit.

C-Capela, Fernando
Pf-Collins, Parker
Sf- Hunter
Sg- Huerter, Reddish
Pg- Young, Ball

I think that has the potential to be a really special 9 man rotation right there.

An excerpt from The Athletic:

Zach Harper wrote:Atlanta Hawks receive Clint Capela and Nene

I absolutely love this move for the Atlanta Hawks...Capela just wants to rim run and dunk off lobs. That’s a perfect pairing for Trae Young on offense. Defensively, Capela gives a lot of stability with executing defensive systems, although his mettle will be tested on that end with such a young team next to him. He’ll need some guys to grow up quickly on that end, but he should make a huge difference. He also can play next to John Collins fairly easily, as Collins is getting more and more comfortable with his outside and midrange jumpers. The Hawks don’t expect there to be any clashing of styles there. The Hawks will end up paying Capela a yearly salary that could have been as much as half of what Drummond would have demanded and probably commanded of them. All it costs them is expiring contracts and Brooklyn’s first-round pick.

As long as Capela is healthy, the Hawks get their big acquisition of the summer — a defensive-minded center — a few months early.

Were you guys aware we gave up that 2024 2nd rounder from GS from the Omari trade?

Atlanta also coughed up a second-round pick in 2024 from Golden State, a likely necessary condition since the Brooklyn pick could conceivably turn into a pair of seconds.

Millsap needs to be productive for Denver for an argument to be made. That hasn't happened since being relevant with our Hawks.

I believe management knows that Collins and Capela can play together. We seem to make big trades only when we know the main talent will have good chemistry. It doesn't make sense for Collins to be at the 5 fulltime anyways.

Yes and it's small things to a giant. By the time any of those picks are relevant other than this year, the thought is that the Hawks are a formidable playoff team.

But I love this trade.

I'll give you Luka possibly and maybe Millsap, but Bud didn't want any part of this rebuild. I was good with that because he stunk as the GM and his personnel decisions ensured the Hawks would have to go this route. It's starting to bear fruit however minimal it is at this point.

Yup, as soon as Bud realized he wouldn't have a decent team to coach, he wanted out. That was expected, but only happened because of Travis gutting the roster. We're late on this rebuild. At the time, people thought (and some even guaranteed) we would be back in the playoff scene in 3 years. We're not. We're getting closer, slowly but surely.
