You think of Miami where their team just last year was going no where with one of the highest team salaries in the league. That for us would be a major disaster. But not for Riley. He flipped a few players, moved some of their ready young players up and still had the money to grab Jimmy. Even after all that, still is trying to move the needle by acquiring Iggy and maybe a few more.
To me the issue with GarPax is they have been in their position so long without pressure or consequence that they have no real foresight anymore of what they league is or how to build a great team.
Also look at how he built/masked Josh Richardson’s value, bordering Jimmy’s value. Now look at Josh Richardson.
Not the first time he’s done it. I’m thinking back to Caron Butler; he convinced the league he’s the next Grant Hill, till he became an overpaid journeyman after leaving the Heat. Now you have Nunn and Herro, who are no doubt impressive rookies, but I’m sure he’d move them if the right player came out.
And the thing is, he’s not just BSing the value. He gets those guys to excel on teams with good chemistry and two-way systems.
Really impressive. Also — I don’t ever remember injuries thrown out as an excuse, despite Bosh retiring early on a max contract with a blood clot health condition, which they continued paying for years after his last game.
