Christian Wood should be our target in the off season. I believe we will pursue him AGGRESSIVELY (and I mean,
aggressively)
He is a 24 year old unrestricted (!!!!) free agent this offseason at the power forward position. He is a lob threat, and can stretch the floor, and is a rebounder and defender. Basically, he's an off ball forward wet dream.
His per 36 numbers are 1.5 3PG on 38% 3P%, 22 ppg, 10 rpg, 1 stl, 1.5 blk.
Since the beginning of February he has averaged 34 mpg, and here are his stats
https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/woodch01/gamelog/2020#99-113-sum:pgl_basicThey are more or less in line with his per 36, and to be completely real they actually exceed his per 36 averages.
Right now this guy is as good as it gets. He is quite frankly at this stage, a better player than Ayton. I'd be prepared to offer him a very, very nice contract. 538 Raptor rating likes him a LOT too
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-nba-player-ratings/He is the T-18th best player according to total overall raptor. As you'll notice, that rating seems to occasionally inflate players who play for good teams or with good teammates perhaps a little bit too high, as Caruso and Ivica Zubac are up there. But Christian Wood plays for an unspectacular Detroit Pistons team.
So to recap, he has good per 36 numbers backed up by a solid sample size of recent play with large minutes, he fits in terms of skill set, fits age-wise, and the most current advanced stats love him. He is an UFA so we would not have to give up assets to get him unlike Aaron Gordon or Markannen. This is the guy. Go hard as possible, and I almost guarantee this will see us in the playoffs next year, after which we'd be able to sign Oubre and go over the cap.
