People can still leave the house to exercise or walk the dog, but are supposed to maintain distance from others. You can still gonget groceries too. But things that are largely recreational like going to movies and meeting up with friends are out.

The point is to make people wake up and realize how serious this is. No one is going to be arrested for driving around.

Public buy in is important but unfortunately it seems a lot of people have to have this thing right on their doorstep in order to start taking it seriously. Even then, it's no guarantee.

You are totally right. I had to run out today here in the Charlotte suburbs and it was basically business as usual from what I could see.

It's going to take stacks of bodies and people being impacted personally to get people to act... which of course means it will be too late and we'll have some worst case scenario situations

The crime of insider trading refers to purchasing or selling a security while in possession of material, non-public information concerning that security, where the information is obtained from a breach of fiduciary duty, or a duty arising from a relationship of trust or confidence. So if you don’t owe a fiduciary duty and didn’t get the information from someone who did, you can’t really be guilty of insider trading.

Certainly a terrible look and I’m sure there’s specific guidelines regarding lawmakers buying/selling stock, but not sure it’s insider trading.

As far as I know, these would be in violation of the STOCK Act. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STOCK_Act

Not exactly insider trading, but pretty much insider trading based on information only provided to Congress. I'm no lawyer, but some of these seem pretty damn blatant.

The big question is what information did they get? At the time of the meeting it wasn't a surprise that there was a serious virus in China. That was public information. I also don't think simply selling stock is enough. Did they take short positions? The one lady from GA is up for a primary so she may lose that. I doubt Burr will be required to step down, especially if it is true that he also bought a bunch of stock at a later date.

OMG.... I mean this is so awful. It's a borderline crime against humanity. They knew, and kept lying to us while profiting themselves ; not caring that many, many people would die as a result

Some are open - most are entirely closed. All will be closed soon. Supermarket or bust. At least America will learn how to cook now.

You make some fair points.. but the reason to test doctors and nurses is so they can keep working. Many are having to quarantine because they've been exposed and can't go back to work until they either finish quarantine or get tested

Nope. In Italy all doctors and nurses work, even those confirmed to have it. They are only asked to quarantine if they are very symptomatic. In China they had doctors working 72 hour shifts wearing diapers and some died of exhaustion.

As for the economic news, the stock market should be kept closed until there is a significant reprieve or end to the Pandemic.

https://www.ccn.com/dow-jones-in-freefall-as-wall-street-begs-for-stock-market-shutdown/

Markets can't close. Retirees have to make withdrawals every month, stocks need to be liquidated sometimes, etc. etc.

It's just not feasible.

It would also damage the economy even further

If the choice is between a lack of liquidity for some retirees/pensioners/people who have assets in the stock market (which is not a majority of Americans, especially those who will be out of work), and a cascading chain of bank failures ala Bear-Sterans, then closing the market is far and away the better option.

Closing the market stabilizes the values at whatever they are (whether or not that matches reality) and would put a temporary halt to the economy. (which is what is happening regardless, so at least let's have the Stock Market reflect reality in that way)

So almost every factory should be working on ventilators and masks and whatnot, but looks like we will need at least one pumping out guillotines.

Omg my keto diet might be what saves me.
I love Keto's results but by month 3 I just couldn't stick with it :(. My inflammation started reducing. Aches and pains mostly gone. Just so hard man.

I have friends who swore by it for the first while and then... same reaction as yours. It's just not a 'natural' way to live long-term. My Mom did it for a while, too, but then adjusted accordingly.

For a long while I've gone the Mediterranean path (wine included - that might be my own adjustment, so be it), but honestly it has more to do with my preferred palate than anything else. Why give up what you love when it's balanced and sensible AND supremely delicious?

Anyway, a bit of a tangent, and I respect people trying different things to see what works for them, especially for protection now. I bought some extra zinc and vitamin D thanks to reading throughout these threads and getting some medical advice. Working on finding elderberry. Can't hurt... Thanks for the info.

Can any of you New Yorkers tell me why your Gov hasn't done what California has done? You guys are ground 0 for this. He needs to be responsible and take the appropriate steps. It's crazy that he hasn't done it already.

Eh - being serious all the time helps no one. They are sports reporters... not political experts or doctors. People need to let off some steam and not freak out all the time

That's true. It is important to be in good spirits when you're self-isolating. People are social animals and with human contact out of the picture for a while, it is important to find other avenues to let off some steam.

Yeah, this.

I'd say, too, that as important as it is to make sure the message of the seriousness of Covid-19 sinks in, it's also a balance of unplugging from the media. We know what we need to do now. Any info we get we can check up on, but there IS a constant feed of news, and it may get to the point of over-saturation for those who 'get it' and it seeps in to have an adverse effect.

Taking a step back, breathing, resetting - we don't often get the chance to do it, and without sounding like a tree hugger, the mental health aspect is also about NOT watching the news as much. I appreciate greatly that people have serious choices to make, families to provide for, but we're no good to them or ourselves if we're not cycling through letting go and recharging on what sustains us. For fellow RealGMers --

Ok to be fair, two of the senators who sold stock look really, really bad... but the others not as much. The Burr and Loeffler are screwed.

Again--what information did they get? That is a bi-partisan list of senators and I don't think it is fair to immediately jump to the conclusion that they all did something wrong. It was public knowledge at the time of the meeting that there was a HUGE issue in China.

These scum bags got insider trading, dumped millions of their stock, then went on national and local tv and told the sheep that voted for them that it was all fake news.
