Coughing up blood is scary. When I had my bout about 2 weeks ago with the horrible chest/lung issues, I coughed up some blood and it was very worrisome. Luckily it stopped though.

It was already approved for compassionate use. They allow quite a few things once doctors have determined that a patient is likely terminal since you can't really make things worse.
That's an amazingly useful loophole. I've always thought if Dr's gave me a 10% chance to live why not let me try some random potential cure? You get to be a guinea pig for science basically AND may get lucky. Nothing to lose.

I thought about making this it's own thread because it could get lost here and I know some people were asking about this.

Yeah New York numbers are scary. I have to keep considering population size but even still. They could be looking at 3000 deaths a day 2 weeks from now.

Good news. We really need capacity for like 50K or more tests a day in many places. Or at least 25K in bigger cities. But we need to build hospitals and/or renovate closed down ones, build big tent care centers if need be, use gymnasiums, etc.

Of course that doesn't help with the PPE, but building will take a while to do, so good to get head start on that and give construction workers some work. I know it's good for them to stay home, but we can't have hospitals be overrun or we just stack up deaths.

There are reports of people trying it for Covid and overdosing also.

There will be mixed results, which is why doctors are speaking more carefully about the drug.

At least less than 1/4 of those hospitals need ICUs at this point. Hopefully it stays that way or decreases.

Taking any medication without the supervision of a doctor is risky. There are plenty of medicines people use every day that have serious side effects if recommended dosages are exceeded.

Man, that is really good news. I agree that cutting the red tape is so essential in times of crisis. That was a HUGE problem with the rollout of tests, that and the CDC completely botching their version.

"Many millennials and even younger people might be ignoring these social distancing warnings because they think coronavirus won't affect them — but they're wrong. While patients age 60 or older or those with underlying health issues face the highest risk of death from the virus, younger people are also getting seriously ill. Nearly one-third of confirmed cases in the U.S., and 20% of those hospitalized, were between the ages 20 and 44, according to CDC data released last week."

So younger adults actually accounted for a large portion of the hospitalizations. Spring-breakers who did not practice social distancing could have done more damage than they thought.

Cuomo has seriously been a rockstar in all of this. He has shown such great poise, calm, and leadership. The man was born to be a great leader and New Yorkers should be proud to have him.

Ideally, we'd compare these numbers to the age distribution of the population and calculate an index. That way we could conclude if people in different age groups are more or less likely to contract the virus.

I've been suggesting that people in New York who are able to leave the city should seriously consider doing so. There's no way to contain the virus in that environment.

This drug needs to be tested in more cases ASAP. But that '100% effective' study some were touting last week failed to mention that it was for only SIX patients. Any talk about the study pro or con needs to include the actual numbers. Then maybe we can figure out a way to fast track this. And people who want to take it right now, will at least understand what we actually really know at this point.

If there's anything we here at RealGM collectively understand, it's the potential downsides of extrapolating small sample sizes right? 8-)
