Outside of the city it's mostly Westchester county (first cluster was found here in New Rochelle) and Nassau county making up the bulk of the cases, oddly enough New Rochelle hasn't reported any deaths, and the 100 or so people who were infected 3 weeks ago are asymptomatic and still positive.

Northern European countries are doing much better than Spain, Italy, France, and the U.S.

you're generalizing here.
Denmark was the second in Europe to go in full lockdown after Italy
Sweden is still playing with fire (their leading epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, is a bit crazy) and basically doing nothing special.
Norway, Sweden, Denmark have less ICU beds per capita than Slovakia and Poland for example....just to give you a general feel

they're not doing any better in terms of testing for example or strict measures

To be fair, i was generalizing as well, so Noctilux bringing up these countries is legitimate.

Per the latest update:

The Federal Government is shipping the following:
-9.4 million N95 masks
-20 million surgical masks
-3.1 million face shields
-2.6 million surgical gowns
-14.6 million gloves
-6,000 ventilators (4,000 of which went to NY)

That is a good update. We need to get those critical supplies out.

Here's a great article by Haslem on the Player's Tribune about the situation. It is basically a response about those videos of spring breakers in Florida:

It really is a great article. I thought about starting a thread about it since I believe it can generate some good discussion but since we do have a dedicated article about Covid-19 in here, I thought it best not to open another one and put it here instead.

So several states have had to do this now:

Part of the most recent update to the State of Emergency executive order for NY (Exec order 202.10, for the curious):

No pharmacist shall dispense hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine except when written as prescribed for an FDA-approved indication; or as part of a state approved clinical trial related to COVID-19 for a patient who has tested positive for COVID-19, with such test result documented as part of the prescription. No other experimental or prophylactic use shall be permitted, and any permitted prescription is limited to one fourteen day prescription with no refills.

Vice President Pence just said that that the devices anesthesiologists use can be converted to a ventilator with the change of a part and that would add tens of thousands of ventilators to the overall pool of them. That would be great news.

While it's frustrating to see many kids and quite frankly adults totally disregarding the current situation and living life like nothing is happening is unsurprising. I remember when I was a teenager, and I felt invincible and did some incredibly stupid things. It's only when I started to see friends and people I know go to jail is when it hit me that if I don't grow up quicker I'm going to end up in the same position.

Though it's not forgiveable, it is still understandable as to why some of the younger generation are being more flippant about the situation. At that age you tend to only think about yourself, you want to have fun and you have little to no responsibilities to worry about. The greater picture doesn't seem as clear.

That said, it wasn't too long ago that even I didn't take the situation all that seriously, and my mindset was, I'm a home body, I'm healthy, I've got nothing to worry about, but with the increasingly serious escalation of the matter, it turned from worrying about myself and more about those around me, whether it be the people at work, my family and friends. And if more people stopped worrying about themselves (the hoarding behavior is a good example) and began to worry more about others, this whole situation around the world will subside sooner.

If this means giving up on some liberities which many of us take for granted anyways, why? Because it's not just about us as individuals anymore, it's about your neighborhood, your state, your country, the world. I've alluded to it in a different post, but many of the first world countries have the technology to shut cities down, using South Korea as the perfect example, where they've used cell phone tracking, survelliance and credit card tracking technology to ensure people stay at home, especially those infected and targeting people who have been in contact with those infected and it has been highly effective. Does it give up on some liberities and freedoms many people live by, sure, but right now people need to think bigger picture and minimizing the devastating impact sooner rather than later.

I went on a tanget for which I apologise, but I live in Australia and we are going by this entire situation very similar to the United States of sorts, and the government here are seemingly more worried about the economy, moreso than people's safety and though they have recently taken additional steps to ensure people are doing the right thing, I personally don't think it hasn't gone far enough and those who are infected as a result is continuing to trend upwards.

Everyone stay safe, wherever you reside and please do the right thing, not only for yourself, but for those around you.
Why so serious?

Florida having a larger population than NY and being that far behind in testing is terrifying.

Louisiana will be bad, but the state is small.

He means today which is correct (although NY reports data several times per day so this may change).

I meant yesterday... yet no one is talking about michigan... barely anything about new jersey or louisiana. All the attention is on NYC because of Cuomo

Ok.. this maybe OT, if so.. mods just remove it.

To those USA realgmers living in the suburbs or gated communities and under quarantine/lockdown/ whatever sugary words your politicos used... can you still go out of your house and in your garden? What is the limit? Can you go walk and pace in the street? I'm sure that's not possible to those in apartments inside the cities so asking those outside.

You can only pace the streets if you live in a gated community. Normal housing, no.
