Pass. He’s Sexton but can’t shoot
He's really got no NBA position. I think a lot of folks may be under the notion that he's a starting caliber NBA PG and not realize that he wasn't even the starting PG for Kentucky (Ashton Hagans was). Maxey has nice physical tools for a guy his height (just 6'3") and he can put up some highlight real plays, but I'm not sure what he actually can do consistently in the NBA to warrant a lottery pick (certainly not a lottery pick in the top half of the lottery). He doesn't shoot well from deep. He really doesn't create shots for himself that particularly well either off the dribble. At his height you can't play him at the wing in the NBA without basically nullifying his physical advantage against many guards (especially PG"s). So what do you do with him and what things can he do that will make him really succesful in the NBA? He really doesn't have the intensity, explosiveness or shooting ability of a Donovan Mitchell so I don't see him being a Mitchell type short physically strong, athletic SG. And yeah I wasn't a fan of Colin Sexton either.
Yea, he is more of an undersized SG/combo G then a PG but that doesn't necessarily mean he can't be good. There's a lot of combo guards or undersized SGs who are pretty succesful like Mitchell, Bledsoe, Lou Williams, Eric Gordon, McCollum, Beal, etc. Physically, he can fit the modern combo/scoring G type.
Overall he looks like he will be a good scorer in the NBA...He's a good finisher around the rim, nice floater. Can shoot off the bounce. He played really well in big games. Not overly explosive, but he has really great footwork. He can get to his spots, handle some contact and really crafty either going to the glass/rim or hitting floaters. I think he just has a good awareness...on defense too. Looks like he can be a solid/good defender.
A lot comes down to his 3 point shooting. The percentages and consistency werent there but a lot of signs for hope. Has range, great FT shooter, form looks good, shot well in HS, seems to have the confidence to shoot. I buy that he can be a good shooter.
Hes not at the top of my board. Maybe he ends up being a Lou Williams type scorer off the bench which is still good. But I see some sneaky potential too. Loved that he played great in big games too. Maybe some bias there. One of those guys who I think would have had a great tournament and worked up his stock
