I don't understand this take. TD is clearly making a statement that the masks are not helpful. This has been a statement by the anti-mask protestors and companies are even selling masks with holes in it to these people.

Anti-masks actions (like TD) helps feed the anti-masks views against humanity lol. TD's actions are dangerous, just like anti-semetic views are. Both helps feed an environment that allows dangerous views to exist and be legitimized.
What do these Masks do? They protect me from YOU and vice-versa. Some people still don't get this. The masks are not meant to protect you from the virus. The masks are meant to help significantly reduce the opportunity for you to spread the virus to some one else (many people are asymptomatic which means they won't even know they have the virus).
Consider that there are over 18,000,000 cases of Covid worldwide and over 690,000 deaths from Covid, the spreading of mis-information and anti-mask rhetoric only hurts the fight to flatten the curve. The majority of people worldwide have been social distancing and making efforts to help reduce the spread of the virus since March and the places where people have taken this seriously have been able to re-open faster as the cases in these areas are low enough to be "manageable".
This is what I don't get with the anti-maskers. They want the freedom to not have to wear a mask, yet the actions they take just prolong the need for everyone to wear masks/social distance. If they had some empathy and sense of community and followed the scientific recommendations then we could all get to a point where these restrictions are lifted earlier. Their wants oppose their actions and that's what happens when you don't understand the science and get caught up in your little facebook groups talking about mah freedoms etc.
To be fair to TD on the masks, what evidence do you have that 'home made' or fabric construction masks help reduce the spread of COVID?
I thought there's scientific debate on this. If the virus is predominantly spread in aerosol form (think an incredibly small mist that hangs in the air), it will pass through those masks. You would need a mask capable of filtering out the virus. Do your pants filter out a fart? Obviously not, that's why you can smell them.
If the virus is predominantly spread through droplets of spittle, then the masks will help.
Hasn't there been a lot of back and forth (from the WHO, CDC and medical officials) on whether home-made masks will help? That's why they weren't required/recommended to start, right? Because, depending on the way the virus is transmitted, they may or may not help.
There is a whole lot of theatrics going on right now. Benches seated 2m apart, why? Just for show? That rubs some people the wrong way, you get that right? He might be protesting herd based psuedo science.
I don't support his anti-vaxxer position (if he holds such a position, I haven't read the OP that brought up that point). That's scientifically un-founded and demonstrably dangerous.
