This is the way. Everything is upside down but the Jays keep on winning. Either this is a .650 team being held back by its manager or something is being done right.

Or it is a talented team on a hot streak right now that is still being managed horribly by an idiot.

He may be the worst manager we've ever had. I almost hope we lose this one so we can tally another L on games that Montoya has lost for us.

Pulling starters early/before their third time through the order is kind of the by-the-numbers thing to do these days for managers. That said, sometimes you just have to recognize the context of the game and make decisions on that basis. Not letting Shoemaker go out for the 6th was one of those times (not letting Ryu pitch the 7th last time out was also similar). We've now had to use all of our good relievers today for this win, so this will likely come back to bite us tomorrow or at another time.

Biggio (the team's likely best hitter without Bichette active) batting 8 was obviously stupid, but at least that doesn't have as big an impact as literally throwing away outs in a tie game.

It's definitely possible. I do think people tend to be pretty quick to jump to conclusions here - and it's basically always the conclusions that they're smarter/better than the guys running the team. Days gone by that was a bit more of a possibility, I think. Now? I think an open mind is probably going to be a bit more needed.

I mean, all this talk about destroying confidencs by having batters bunt with 2 strikes. A good manager frames that more as trust that they'll get it right with a single try and in return that the players trust them that it will work sometimes - not always, because it's baseball.

I actually think a lot of these calls are coming from beyond the manager. The manager is thers to get guys to buy in so that they trust the team and understand the team trusts them no matter unusual asks might be made, and there have been a fair few.

Not a chance. It means you're prepared to sacrifice a "useful" out or even a completely "non-useful" out (K) rather than believe the player might be able to put the ball in play; which most of the time accomplishes the same thing as a bunt, and often results in a base hit.

Bunting with 2 strikes is not "small ball", it's chicken chit.

If you need to move runners, trust the hitter to hit to the right side or get the bunt down early in the count.

(There might be very few exceptions, including if you are super-fast combined with the fact that the infield has completely misplayed/misshifted you - in which case you are bunting for a base hit and not trying to sacrifice anything).

I don’t care about destroying confidence. I care about throwing outs away in a tie game in the 7th inning by asking somebody repeatedly who has struggled to bunt to bunt when the consequence of not getting it down is an out. Sacrifice bunting in general as a strategy in baseball makes little sense and it is absolutely terrible in this context.

It was just an inane, unjustiable decision from a run probability perspective and the fact that he didn’t learn from his initial mistake a few weeks ago makes it even more damning. The guy is a complete idiot and winning a few games in a row due to a hot offense doesn’t change that. Hell, they could win the WS this year in spite of him by some luck and I’d still think that.

Using Wilmer Font in a tie game in the 6th is a good way to lose that game. This is the price of taking Shoemaker out yesterday.

Instead of trying and failing to bunt, why not just pinch hit for Joe Panik? Crazy thought I know.

Why is he pulling Merryweather in the 9th when he’s dominating?

Probably because the stats he's looking at suggest Merryweather's arm would have fallen off with another pitch.

Are these guys ever made of glass these days. That and babied to an incredible extent.

“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."
