Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
Figures we win a #3 lottery spot in the 1 draft where there is no consensus besides Ball and Edwards. If Hayes is the guy, then let's pick him. I don't like how he fits with Devonte but BPA is more important than fit.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
A lot of mocks have Warriors taking Wiseman at 2. We can only hope there isn't any desperate teams trading up to snag Edwards. I see him as the homerun hit this team needs, he's also the guy with least amount of flaws at the top. Shooting efficiency isn't a huge deal as we've seen countless dudes turn that around once they hit the league.
Donovan Mitchell had a TS of 52% his first year in college, exact same as Edwards.
And, if Lamelo drops instead of Edwards? That'd be crazy and would definitely bring the hype to Charlotte.

Wiseman going at #2 would be absolutely massive as it would assuredly net us Ball or Edwards. Ball is my #1 player in this class and it's just not even close. Too many people I heavily trust when it comes to the draft have reached the same consensus.

Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
The more I watch basketball in its current state it seems like you can break players down into 4 categories.
First type is guys who rely on other players to get them shots (catch and shoot perimeter guys and dunker spot players). They really can’t create their own offense at all.
Second type are guys who can create shots for others (Joe ingles/Rubio types). However are not very good scorers themselves, typically point guards but not always.
Third type are guys who can create their own shots, but not so much for others (Anthony Davis, Jordan Clarkson, Derozan)
Last type are guys that can create their own shots and create for others. These are the superstar guys (Lebron, Luka, Giannis, Mitchell etc..)
When evaluating players for this draft where would you place the top 10 guys?

Yep, LaMelo can create his own shot anytime he wants. It’s more likely to miss but he still takes it

Going by perceptions it looks like the popular choices on this board fall into two groups:
High potential, high risk: Ball, Edwards, Wiseman
Limited potential (but higher floor), low risk: Haliburton, Hayes, Okongwu

Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
The top of this draft reminds me a bit of the 2017 draft. LaMelo reminds me of Lonzo and then you have Edwards in the Fultz mold as the big, athletic, scoring guard, with questions about his efficiency, IQ, defense, and track record of not making his teams better.
I have a feeling this draft could be a similar situation where LaMelo/Edwards go 1/2 and are both disappointments while multiple guys taken in the lottery right after them turn out to be much better.

Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
What is it about LaMelo that causes people to believe he's a top 3 pick and potential star? Is it just that he's got 1-2 skills that are considered elite + his size for his position? I feel like you really need to be able to shoot/score in today's NBA to be considered a high impact player. Without that, you'll be rotational/limited and likely won't see the court during crunch time.

He's got great ballhandling skills when he plays in high profile scrimmages and C-tier leagues at best. Is also tall and...
Ok?
Where's everything else? Its like most of the FOs in the league decided they'd move the annual mystery box pick from the late lotto up into the top 3 in hopes of convincing a GM or owner to waste a high value pick or even trade up to get him.

Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
I truly hope we trade the pick. I am sure the Knicks want our 3rd pick. They are such a poorly run franchise that we can probably get them to trade their 8th pick for our 56th pick.

If we trade even if we were to drop back to pick #20 there would still be possible talent on the board like
PG - Tyrell Terry
PG - Devon Dotson
SG - Devin Vassell
SG - Leandro Balmoro
SF - Tyler Bey
SF - Josh Green
PF - Patrick Williams
PF - Saddiq Bey
PF - JaDen McDaniels
C - Zeke Nnaji
C - Jalen Smith

NBA has become much more about entertainment lately. Look at the stars they showcase, almost all of them have that "IT" factor. Well, Lamelo has it too. What that means is he will get every opportunity for success from favorable calls to top of the line training.
The guy plays with a chip on his shoulder as well, something MJ can really appreciate. I know it's hard to believe a TV star can become a superstar but just remember Disney owns ESPN.

Re: 2020 Draft Discussion
Lamelo's efficiency needs to improve but his handle is elite. He'll often be the best ball handler on the floor most games he plays.
Also something that never gets mentioned with him is AST/TO ratio (2.73) which is surprisingly excellent considering how many homerun passes he makes. Not to mention, he averaged 7.6 rpg as a point guard.

I'd be curious to know how Jason Kidd looked coming into the draft compared to LaMelo.

He's an elite playmaker which is why he doesn't have to become a three point shooter. Shot looks broken but he's going to make his teammates better and you need to do that if you can't score efficiently.
I don't think he's a fit here because while we need a second ball-handler we still lack a go-to scorer. He's a really really bad fit here. So I like a trade down with the Knicks. I'd want Mitchell Robinson + 8 + right to swap 2021 firsts.
It has been written...
