Yeah yeah, this draft sucks...just like every draft does. And yet every year, GMs hold on to these picks as they approach the draft like they're hording gold.
Who was the last player traded (with or without a draft pick added) prior to or on draft night for a pick anywhere near as high as #4?
Because draft picks are really valuable until a player is picked using them.
Ray Allen comes to mind. He was about to turn 32 years old, and recuperating from surgery on both ankles. The pick was in a weak draft; the only two future all-stars available at #5 were Joakim Noah and Marc Gasol. (That said, the top two picks were locked in stone as Oden/Durant in some order, and #3/4 turned out to be Al Horford and Mike Conley.)
That's not a bad one. 12 years ago, but it still very similar. I'll admit that I was surprised Ray went for #5 at the time. Maybe I'll be surprised that Hayward gets us to #4...but I doubt it.
Anyway, I've said my piece on the matter. I hope I'm wrong and we get lots if he's traded. But I can already see the thread where people complain about how little Danny got for him.
