"win now" players are for good teams that can never hurdle that bar or good teams getting old, both have a small window
teams that go 19wins and are at the bottom of the league and perennial lottery teams are supposed to know it takes more than one player, but leave it to minnie to pick the worst draft year in ages to try to pull a double whammy
That is very subjective opinion “this is the worse draft year in ages.” That will not be confirmed nor denied for about 3 years.
Too many around these parts are quick to equate hype for a draftee as equal to their NBA playing potential and actual basketball abilities.
Let’s say Covid didn’t hit. Does Edwards have the same hype as Morant with a complete tournament to showcase? We don’t know. But because he didn’t get that hype (like hype credibility currency in the bank), does it mean his actual NBA abilities are any different because he didn’t play in the tournament? Nope. I don’t think he jumps any less high or shoots much differently or runs slower.
How about Wiseman. Say he played and showcased his freak size and athleticism. Sports center and YouTube of Wiseman dunking on heads would be all the MSM rage. Does that hype make him a better NBA player or just a better hyped #1 draft pick? One that makes fans and NBA executives sleep better at night when making him the pick. Lack of hype doesn’t make him shorter or less freak in size to athleticism ratio.
If scouts actually think after whatever evaluation they can Covid do, think Edwards isn’t a NBA player worth top 3, or Wiseman isn’t a freak worth the gamble, or Ball isn’t more Doncic than Rubio, sure make it a weak draft. But it will be hard with such Covid limitations to truly make that NBA judgement. Including hyping a kid all over town.
We will all see in 3 short years.
"let's wait and see" is an easy out that avoids the question.
the point is since its regarded by ALL as the worst draft in years, and teams and gms are reacting to it. they are thinking of negotiating their drafts spots because of it. therefore it suddenly becomes NOT a normal draft with teams holding onto their normal patterns and thus all the picks become a shot in the dark.
in other words take this Minnie rumor. well if Minnie trades that pick and that pick becomes a great choice for whatever team, whether they draft lamelo or someone no one ever heard of before, well then minnie lost its pick all because they acted on the perception that this was a bad draft..
I mean the draft has always been a cr@p shoot anyway which is basically what you're saying, and I agree,,, but looking back never helps anyone....didn't help them who passed on doncic. all you can do is react to the present, and the present says "this draft sucks therefore we'll trade our pick away for a win now player", and I'm saying the rationale behind that decision, the "win now" reasoning, is flat out the wrong method for minnie
