This season it means 5 mil more before luxury tax implications set in.

Next summer, Lakers will have 5 mil more in pure cap space. If the cap projections remained the same (125 mil cap), the Lakers would have roughly 35.8 million instead of 30.8 million.

Not all that far off of the 30% of the cap for 7-9 year vets such as Giannis (37.5 mil).

Does that include an extension for AD? I guess it depends on how many years he signs for.

The extra 5 million this year could allow them to pay a bit more to someone like Rondo if he'd take a one year deal.

Or all those “championships*” the Celtics won in the 60s against a Mickey Mouse League haha. That’s probably the biggest laugh.

Keep living off the past though.

only 7 teams back then during the PEACH BASKET ERA thats why it was easy for them to "dominate" LOL!!!! none of them old celts should be on the 50 greatest and its time to bump off russell, hondo, cousy, and all those other unathletic farts off the list. Cupcake Era celts like tatum and walker are better than any of those old celts

This is something someone like Daryl Morey would get huge applause for just for trying.

See Messi trying to opt out as well.

Also, the thread title says it's saving the Lakers 5 mil per year.

It should really specify it saves the Lakers 5 mil in cap per year, Lakers will still be paying Deng. It just won't be on the cap if this succeeds

The cost of being coached by Thibs in your peak years. Of that Bulls star core, only one who survived intact was Butler (tho he was injured alot in Bulls years).

Or Magic did... He was the key guy behind getting him to LA in the first place... LeBron and Klutch loved him.

But the Magic era was super rocky behind the scenes and like it or not (I don't really as a long time laker fan and not so much of a LeBron fan) LeBron and his team have brought with them a certain stability and calm...
I would guess that comes from the fact that it's essentially LeBron's team right now and he doesn't really have to answer to anyone, but still...
And, it's an open-book... Who knows how long LeBron stays and how smoothly that transition happens... We could be having 'LeBron Ruined this Franchise' threads in a couple years...

They can't. This would open an insane can of worms for stretched and bought out bums.

Somebody getting stretched and not playing 25 games isn't something that happens that often. The way Deng trajectory looked, he looked hurt before he got to the Lakers.

Deng played 26 games for Minnesota. Don't forget to add in preseason games( preseason games counted against Portland when they wanted the cap space for Darius Miles)

I can't blame the Lakers for applying. This is a GM doing due diligence and making sure he is putting the team in the best position to succeed. $5m in cap space, not this summer, but next is going to be huge for LA and by the looks of it they would need to apply now or the application period would expire.
Pelinka obviously got the tick of approval for spending the extra money, and who here wouldn't take advantage of that?
Whether the Lakers get this approved or not is another question; however, why not go for it?

Yes, I assumed max contract status for AD for the next 2 seasons
