One potential scenario could involve the Thunder. If reports that they are interested in moving up to draft Ball are true, and Ball is available at No. 2, the Warriors could target Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. At 22 years old, Gilgeous-Alexander threads the needle of having the potential to develop into a multi-time All-Star while also being able to contribute right away. Last season for the Thunder, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 19.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
Something to think about: Has Golden State’s reported interest in Wiseman spooked Charlotte enough to move up to No. 1 to take the former Memphis center, thereby leaving Ball on the board? This would be some impressive chess-playing by Myers.
The trade exception
News that teams will receive luxury tax relief has made using the trade exception more palatable to the Warriors.
Read more about that here. But, after the draft, Golden State figures to be a major player in deals to absorb unwanted salary. Potential scenarios range from simple (Rudy Gay from the Spurs at $14 million) to the complicated (the Warriors swooping in as part of a three-team trade to take an unwanted contract.)
There are several players who make less than $17.2 million whose current teams might be motivated to move, but not a lot who make sense for Golden State. Names that keep popping up include Gay, Eric Bledsoe, Robert Convington, Evan Fournier, Kelly Olynyk and Kelly Oubre.
But Myers mentioned a willingness to take back unwanted salary in order to add assets. The price for the Warriors begins at a first-round pick (though it all depends on the player, salary, and where that pick projects to be).
Keep an eye on what happens with Chris Paul and the Suns. Should a deal materialize, the Warriors could take advantage of Oklahoma City’s unwillingness to take back salary that matches the $41 million owed to Paul. Ditto for whatever team trades for Holiday, though matching salary there is less complicated
