I'm confused. Who goes where in this scenario?
Hayward is a UFA right now, he doesn't have to do anything with the Celtics. We can just sign him and immediately trade him to Indiana for Turner and bypass the Celtics completely. Also, the Pacers can't get him unless the Celtics or some other team with cap space (i.e. us) signs and trades him there.
That's assuming Hayward isn't asking for a $100 million dollar deal. He might be, but I doubt anyone outside of the Knicks will give him that much.
I'm assuming by signing and flipping Hayward to the Pacers "immediately" you mean after the moratorium on trading free agents ends?
Here's how I see it...
The Pacers have no space for Hayward but covet him. Hayward wants to return home to Indiana at 25 M. We can absorb Turner and free up 19 but that falls short of Hayward's demands. The Celtics would need to take back bad money on top of Turner but instead are demanding Warren with Turner to get to Hayward's magic number. I guess we could send Rozier to the Knicks who can absorb Rozier into cap and open up the full 25 M Indiana needs. We would absorb bad contracts with Turner. And maybe the Knicks attach a Mavs first round pick or our 2021 second.
But the Knicks want Hayward, or at least they're posturing like they want Hayward which ups the price on them facilitating Turner to the Hornets, Rozier to the Knicks and Hayward to some other team (Pacers) instead of the Knicks.
