As the process around Holiday dragged out and the Nov. 18 draft inched closer, the Bucks upped their initial offer of Bledsoe and a couple of first-round draft picks and a future pick swap, eventually reluctantly agreeing to include veteran guard George Hill.

The Bucks endured a long weekend while New Orleans mulled over the offers and, effectively, the direction of their team. Griffin eventually came back with another ask: one more first-round pick and one more pick swap to make for three total first rounders and two swaps. Essentially, New Orleans wanted to control the Bucks' draft for five years, starting in 2020.

This last offer staggered Milwaukee. As the decision-makers discussed it internally, sources said, they knew it was an overpay. They also knew there was the matter of eventually extending Holiday, which is expected to cost in the range of $30 million per season, sources said. But they recognized that not only would it be a tremendous upgrade to their roster but a strong message to the man in Greece, who was waiting to see substantial improvement.

And I'm totally fine with the gamble. This is not operating with hindsight, I said I was fine with the gamble as long as they had the balls to tear it down if it didn' work. I'm thrilled we don't have to find out. I think it was almost silly to hold it over Horst that he needed Giannis to confirm 100% he'd sign if they made a move like this. The likely reality is there is no move that could have ensured that instantly and without Giannis needing to do due diligence. Bucks/Horst shot their shot and they won, regardless of how loyal Giannis is. Props where props is due.

Interested in how the Bogdan part of The Athletic article connects that fiasco to how Giannis has always “made it clear that he had no interest in being buddy-buddy with stars around the league.”

Despite that he did some recruiting this summer which the Bucks failed to take advantage of in spectacular fashion. I suspect that was discussed plenty at these meetings, and thankfully he was persuaded.

All of which made the Bogdanovic situation so concerning for the Bucks last month.

Losing out on a player in free agency was one thing, but losing a player whom Antetokounmpo was known to have heavily recruited just weeks before this fork-in-the-road moment for the franchise was quite another. It certainly didn’t help matters that it had all been so messy.

The Bucks, of course, believed they had a sign-and-trade lined up with Sacramento for the 28-year-old small forward that came shortly after the Jrue Holiday deal with New Orleans. In terms of the possible ripple effect on Antetokounmpo’s choice, sources say there was extreme confidence within the Bucks at the time that their franchise centerpiece would sign the deal, in part, because of the moves that had been made. But then it all fell apart.

Bogdanovic headed for Atlanta. The NBA launched a tampering investigation into the ordeal, in large part, because news of an alleged agreement had leaked via a news outlet nearly five days before the formal start of free agency. The Bucks knew that none of this would help, but it was tough to tell how much it would hurt.

This is dumb. I'm not sure why anyone would eat crow. All anyone was doing was speculating what would happen if he didn't sign. And given that he strung us along for quite awhile, I don't think speculating was unreasonable.

When i was talking about Giannis agent interview in Greece back in the summer and explain why im not worried about Giannis signing the doomsayers instead ignored that and went with the wildest speculations from trashing his personality,calling him out during playoffs, calling him this or that and even asking to be traded...
All this for the guy that took less money on his first extension in order to help us win, claimed many times he loves Milwaukee and how much it mean to him, his agent basically said that Giannis stays but you didn't believed me or any Greek fan promoting this, heck people didnt even believed Voodoo who even got someone inside the team.....

Next time dont be so easy to **** on one constant good our team got and this isnt to you specifically but t all doomsayers around here.

Backing up the Brinks truck without Giannis agreeing to sign blows me away, not in a good way. I don't give them any credit for realizing it was an overpay. It potentially could of went down as the worst trade in league history. Giannis signed and it doesn't look so bad. But the desperation of that move...that they felt they had to trade everything that wasn't tied down is disappointing in so many ways.


Today's a day to celebrate. But tomorrow is the day to line up a Real GM.
