In the meantime, he still hasn't recovered fully from the effects of Covid 19. They'll still probably pick up that 4th year, but his trade value is way down, and because they have Birch, they might decide to trade Bamba.

He is the one player I trade Brown for - straight up of course. I guess it would need to be a multi-player trade? Brown and Wagner?

But I would much rather package Robinson, Wagner and a second - but I don't think that gets it done.

I'd need to get a future 1st back from Orlando if I'm trading Brown and Wagner for Bamba - especially with the question about Bamba's health. Maybe I give them a future 2nd if they relax the protections on the 1st.

I would not trade Brown for Bamba, though on the surface it looks to be more than fair. Probably irrational on my part.

The ideal basis for such a trade would be Robinson, of course -- if Orlando views Bamba as an under-performing high pick, then that's what they can expect to get back for him. Add Wagner, & it might get through the rinse cycle, who knows?

I don't like to trade picks, so I wouldn't add a R2 pick. But... I'd add Pasecniks... or Robin Lopez....

Here's a question: would you consider a trade for Bamba based around Bonga?

Those of us who like Bonga really like him a lot, but... you have to give to get.

(Note that if we traded Moe & Bonga for Mo Bamba, it could make practices go more smoothly!)

I want to wait and see how Brown plays for the first half of the season before considering trading him. Brown's jack-of-all-trades master-of-none shtick isn't ideal in a league full of role-playing specialists, but if he gets just a bit better at all of those trades, he is suddenly a quality starter and possibly within range of sneaking into an All-Star game.

Right now, he averages 14.5, 7.7 and 3.6 per 36 with a TS% of .524 and a 3P% of .341. But imagine if he boosts his percentages a usage a bit and posts 18, 8 and 4 per 36 with a TS% of .560 and a 3P% of .370. That looks a lot like the Khris Middleton of 3 years ago, or Jaylen Brown or Gordon Hayward from last season.

The reason I'm considering trading Brown is - I think his playing times' going down - unless they have an injury or 2 or make a trade. They have two many PG's for him to get time there - even with Westbrook skipping consecutive games. There's 12 minutes a game behind Beal, and that'll be taken by Robinson and Brown. It appears that Bonga's going to start at the 3, and Avdija looks like he might be ahead of schedule there, and some of either Rui's or Bertans' time will likely leak over there - assuming they each play close to 30 minutes a game - which I think is likely.

I'd probably do that.

The bottom line is that I don't think we can keep both Brown and Bonga past their rookie deals when we already have Beal, Avdija, Hachimura and Bertans getting minutes at the 2, 3 and 4 positions. One of Brown/Bonga is gone in 2 years anyhow. I think Brown is likely to be the more valuable player going forward (and the better fit since he can also play some SG, where we lack depth), which makes Bonga expendable.

I don't see the rationale for Orlando who is already chock full of defensive-minded forwards that can't shoot.

Bonga also doesn't have the trade value that Brown has. The Wiz got him for practically nothing, and he lacks the high ceiling that Brown has and that GM's presumably look for.

Mo' Bamba, less Bonga?

I really don't like it. Tucker is 35 years old and on the last year of his deal. He's the type of player you add if you are gunning for a title. We aren't in that position yet. I don't want to trade assets for Tucker only to have him help us win maybe two more games and moving us up from the 8th seed to the 7th seed, all while stunting the development of one of our 4 young forwards.

This is pure Grunfeld thinking. Sheppard has not made a single move like this in his tenure where we sacrificed assets for aging vets (unless you count the Westbrook acquisition). I don't expect him to start now.

I love that guy and I think he provides exactly what this team needs, but I just wouldn't feel good about giving up anything of value to get him. He's old and a one year rental.

They can have Brook Lopez or Ish Smith for him, but nothing else. Not even a 2nd round pick.

There are a couple of other third-string centers who might be worth trading Mo for. My top two are Tony Bradley and Khem Birch. Both are solid defensive third stringers who may be superfluous to their teams and could move up to our backup. Bradley played and practiced with Gobert for two years and hopefully learned some things. His numbers in limited minutes look decent, and he is currently the greatest three point shooter in NBA history. :) Also, his initials are TB, which would get us to three, including two centers. I've seen some indications that the 76ers would rather have a stretch 5 like Mo.

We all know about Birch - we had him a few times and let him go. But he is a solid backup, and started 24 games last year. A little undersized, but he works hard and gets results. He is behind Vuc and Bamba in the rotation, and he may struggle to get minutes. He has little range, but knows his strengths.

Birch is 27. He's not getting any better. WYSIWYG, which is a serviceable backup center - a guy you can find every offseason for the vet minimum or maybe the BAE.

If I'm trading Mo, I want a guy with some theoretical upside because I think Mo has upside to. It wouldn't surprise me if Mo has an 8-year career as a regular rotation player and it's not out of the realm of possibility that he becomes a reliable starter. (I'm not saying it's likely, but it's certainly possible. It's not possible for Khem Birch.)

No doubt Moe has more upside and is a better player than Birch. But he fills a need that we still have (unless there is some magic Robin Lopez pixie dust around). Maybe with a 2nd thrown in I'd do it.

I love the idea of trying to get Bamba, but I have hard time believing Orlando picks Birch over Bamba for the same upside reasons why Moe is more valuable than Birch.

I'm not trading any value to acquire Birch. He is a dime-a-dozen backup center. Indeed, he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. If we want him, we can sign him then. No way I'm trading away Wagner for him.

I could see an Ish/Tucker swap happening. The Rockets just lost Chris Clemons to a torn Achilles leaving them without a backup PG for Wall.

I mean id offer mo and robinson for bamba but honest I don't see a lot I like there in the game he brings and hoenstly I see over paid written all over him. I'd do that trade just to clear playing time for mathews but are you bringing in a former number 6 pick as a back up ? I mean I imagine at some point the kids gonna want a chance to be a starter.idk I'd do it but I see there being issues later on.

The problem is that Tommy didn't sign a useful defensive center this summer. Instead, we got what I fear will be the big man version of Eric Maynor. So I'm looking around the league for someone we could acquire this season at the lowest possible cost who would fit that bill. And this season matters - we are actively trying to win. Backup center doesn't matter that much, and the delta between Lopez and someone else's third stringer won't be that big. But I'd like to find someone.

I'm not fighting for Birch and I don't think he is worth Wagner. (In fact, I think Tony Bradley is better and a better fit.) I'm just trying to figure out a practical solution to this predicament.

Problem is the Rockets would like more value in return...either a juicy second rounder (our 2022 Chi/Det/LA most favorable 2nd round pick) and/or a promising young player (and I fear that could be Bonga or Troy).

To me that's too much to give for a 1-year rental on a 35 year old.
