WISEMAN EXPECTATIONS: Year 1

During that one game he showed signs of having a viable jumpshot as a 7 foot tall 19 year old. Ben Simmons hasn't done that in 4 years.

Yeah, the jumpshot is huge, probably the most important thing in that game. He actually made a lot of mistakes, looked lost at times, and too tentative in others. That's not a criticism, that's just expected first game rookie stuff. But what we saw is that he already has a jumpshot that is more advanced than most people suspected: smoother and with more range. That's got big implications for the rest of his game and his usefulness to the team. I'm not sold until I see him do it more and with consistency. But it's very encouraging. I expected a lot from Wiseman and if anything I'm even more encouraged after 1 game.

Wiseman still has alot to learn, specifically on the feel aspect of the game. The team needs to trust passing him the ball in the post and he needs to make plays for the offense when other players cut and the defense breaks down. We didn't do that once? Last game? Like assists from him is very very bad. I'd rather he become a passing big early than a scoring one, because He isn't going to get many scoring opportunities here. He has the intelligence to learn to pass

Maybe at least 2 assists next game would be a good start

I certainly wasn't expecting his outside shot to look this good. He's 4-5 from 3. AD didn't become confident in his 3pt shot until his fourth season.

I was a vocal Wiseman skeptic. I'm impressed so far. His defense is still mostly a mess as is to be expected. But he's so insanely athletic that he can make up for some of his mistakes and he's not a total klutz so he doesn't carom out of control and foul people when he's trying to make a late rotation.

What encourages me most about Wiseman right now are his jumper and his ability to make adjustments. The jumper looks like defenders will genuinely have to close out on him. I don't think that the shot form lends itself to off the dribble creation, which would be the holy grail unicorn stuff of dreams, but a guy with his size that can shoot is a plus offensively. In the Brooklyn game, I thought Wiseman was setting really weak screens. He barely made contact and wasn't really freeing up anyone in PNR or on pindowns. Lo and behold, today he was putting his full body into the screens and made it hard for defenders to scamper around him.

Probably the lone bright spot after the first couple of games. The shooting has been surprising, that he could be a stretch big right out of the gate as even a remote possibilty was completely unexpected, even from a supporter of his pre draft.

Not sure what I expected from him defensively this season, but highlight blocks were one of them. Looks like we will be getting big doses of those.

He’s gonna be a DPOY candidate in a few years. He’s smart...like really smart.

Once the team...and him.. get the rotations down, he’lol be amazing on that end.

He’s making the occasional difficult block. Once he is able to understand where to be, he can get his feet right in order to maximize his leap. Several times already he has barely put the ball on after a catch, and barely got into position for a block these first few games.

And eventually he’s going to not have to think about where to he and what’s happening around him.

Watching this kid play, I'm trying to temper my expectations and excitement.

But holy crap. Based on his few minutes on the floor so far, it ain't easy.

This reminds me of KAT. I remember the discussion on who should be drafted first between him and Okafor was all about the fact that KAT was a defensive player with some shooting range, while Okafor was the offensive monster with poor defense.
In the end Towns is actually much better on offense than he is on defense and a much better offensive player than Okafor.
I hope Wiseman becomes much better than Towns on the defensive end, I don't care if he doesn't match KAT offensive skills.
