Woah, RGM sweetheart Tim Duncan vs famous RGM position "retired players know less than I do". Who will win?

If bigs could have more personal fouls allowed, at least your starting C, I think it would balance a lot of that out, because teams whose 1st option is a big often can't play him because of the foul trouble.
Yep. WAY too many games where bigs have 3-4 fouls in the first quarter or half. It's idiotic. But as he said, bigs get hammered nonstop inside.

IIRC, that's why Duncan "retired" from FIBA competition after the 2004 Olympics. He felt he was getting mugged in the post every trip down the floor and nothing was ever called.

I'd like to see the NBA do these things to help bigs.
1. Euro rules on goaltending.
2. Take away 3 second violations and 5 seconds back to the basket (although these are rarely enforced anyway, let them camp ALL game if they want).
3. Have a rule where blood has to be drawn for a foul to be called.

You are allowed to bump and be physical on the perimeter as long as you don't affect the shot. You are also allowed, inside, to own the space you're in. Its much more routine that opposing players "own" the same space on the interior, and extremely unlikely that it happens on the perimeter. On the perimeter, you take a shot expecting to land cleanly. You dont usually have someone inside your jersey when you take the shot. In the paint, its very different.
What exactly does he want? The hand-check rule coming back? Or does he want more fouls on the interior?
Nah, this is just an old man complaining about a sport naturally evolving. No one hits singles and moves the runner over anymore! No one runs the ball 40 times a game anymore! Sports evolve and players need to to stay relevant.
You know that's not true and I don't think you really believe that's how it's officiated either. Nowadays the shot attempt happens because there was a bump. Players literally feel a bump or see the defender left his arm too close, and swing their arms through into a 'shot attempt'.

Part of the reasoning is that being tall is more of a pre-requisite to being good at basketball than skill level. They are trying to change that.

Is chucking 30 ft shots and flopping at every hint of contact more skill than big man post game?

Almost like past players don't voice their opinion on this matter because the "old men yells at clouds mob" will inevitably jump down their throat despite it being a big elephant in the room. There is zero physicality in today's game and bigs are definitely neutralized

He is absolutely correct and this is my main issue with the reffing in the modern NBA. The disparity between what's allowed in the low post and on the perimeter is ridiculous.

It's been progressively been called softer since he entered the league at the end of the 90's.
You also used to be able to have fistfights and stay in the game. And in the NFL you could play through a concussion. The leagues do more to protect athletes and their long-term well being. So of course fans hate it
The difference is that we both know how Tim Duncan plays compared to those old heads and he did not contribute to that environment, he grew in it. Career-wise he generally looks like a deer on the court on both ends of the court and rarely if ever causes fights.
The Greatest of All Time debate in basketball is essentially who has the greatest basketball resume of the player who has the best highlights instead of who is the best player

Not really sure why everybody is ok with Timmy just stealing my material like this.
I guess because he's a HOFer and one of the best players ever and still relative in the NBA, and I'm ... ummm... well... just some fictitious online character named after an old character actor.
But still... it hurts, you know.

There is no-call contact on the perimeter all the time, and it wasn’t much different in the old days after the hand check. Perimeter drivers now seek out contact because once the hand-check rule was abolished, playing perimeter defense was tougher and let more skilled offensive players shine

I didn't say anything about a moving screen I'm talking about man-to-man perimeter defense.
I don't know, man, seems like he's making a pretty well reasoned argument to me.

Works fine. He’s grousing about his good old days which really plays well with basketball purists (re: similar complainers)
His style is dead, basketball continues to grow in popularity, and the GB whiffs again

It's completely different. Go watch a game from 1997 or 2003 and tell me it's the same. Saying it's the same is just dishonesty.
