And yes, two players absolutely can transform your defense. Particularly if one of those defenders is a big man. It could allow your team to change the way they play defense. It could allow for more switching.
But anyway, I question whether the big 3 on this team can work together. Look at the 4 games since the trade. In the first two games, Harden and Durant seemed to fit together like a glove. Two wins, including a win over Milwaukee. In the two games after Kyrie came back, he put up big numbers but the team looked disjointed. And it resulted in two losses.
The best teams are those that have a max of 2 star high usage facilitators and 1 star big man. When you have 3 guard/wing players trying to get their touches, it becomes a situation of too many cooks in the kitchen. One of them will have to cut back. And at that point, you’re not getting the value out of the 3rd wheel that you are paying for. That value could be better served at a different position with a different role. It’s about maximizing the total team value.
No I don't need to "transform" the defense.
We just need a couple of guys who are not terrible. A backup Center specifically and a defensive wing player.
Once those needs are addressed the team won't be as bad.
That and better chemistry will fix a lot of these issues.
The first two games the offense was sloppy and we had a ton of turnovers. The Bucks game we won on a last minute game winner from KD and miss from Middleton.
The third game we lost on a game tying 3 from Sexton.
Both of those shots could have gone the other way.
And I don't take much from the terrible injured Magic team we beat.
Harden wouldn't shoot and was passive in the last 2. Thats not on Kyrie. Sorry.
Over the last 4 games, the Nets’ offensive rating is 115.1. That would be 4th in the NBA if they maintained that for the season. And they could easily shoot up to #1 once they get settled in.
But their defensive rating is 119.4. That is HORRIFIC. Over a season, that would put them in dead last by almost a full point, and 5 full points behind the current 29th place defensive team, the Washington Wizards.
These little additions around the edges you are suggesting is what would be needed to take a middle of the pack defense into the top 10. There is no way anything but a major move is going to take this team from being horrific on the defensive side of the ball into the top 10. Even before the trade this team was ranked 24th in defense, and the defense has only gotten worse since then.
And to win a title, you need both a top 10 offense AND defense. That has been historically true every single year, and it’s usually even closer to top 5 on both sides of the ball. There is no shot of that without a major move.
Useless small sample. and only 1 of those 4 games did we have our full squad.
We are playing D-leaguer reggie perry. and we dont have a PF on the roster besided KD. very easy to DRASTICALLY upgrade that with vet min guys.
RHJ + Dedmon would be an enormous upgrade
