Well LaMelo sure looks like the best version of a free-form playmaker since.. Kidd. Immediately opens up the floor with his handles and vision in a way Rubio and Lonzo could not, and he’s got an extra flair that Simmons lacks. Kudos to that RealGM guy I kept calling crazy, who was hot on LaMelo (and Lonzo).
He seemed a bit spectrum to me in a Snell meets Nick Young kind of way, but then I saw that Aaron Brooks interview where he really straight-faced said he’s a surprisingly down-to-earth, cool, good kid. And I kind of had this feeling maybe too much was being made about his character and work ethic.
There was this point where I figured “if AK takes LaMelo, it’s gonna work out.”
I just think we’re gonna be at a point where a lot of traditional metrics aren’t gonna make sense anymore. I was high on Haliburton; several experts thought he’s a ceiling roleplayer. Well- it’s becoming apparent that whatever the old idea of star potential was, it’s not the same anymore.
Honestly, I don’t think Lauri and Wendell were trade-up chips. But 1-2 were available for a price, and Coby, future FRP, etc could’ve been offered. My 2c; the LaMelo tour in Lithuania was bad, and Artunas probably heard back from his countrymen than the Ball family is trouble.
Anyway... Right now LaMelo is the best player in the draft. But I don’t think WCJ and RFA Lauri had any draft day appeal to any of the 3 teams picking ahead.
