Is he max worthy? near max?
I think those players are fools gold. A good defender guard is not valuable as people think. Mavs tried this twice with D.Wright and JRich.
Jason Richardson and Jrue Holiday are both have good height and great wingspan for a PG. Perhaps good for the SG position as well.
They're good defenders/rebounders
for their size and height. You can have J.Holiday or J.Richardson. They're not going to offer any better defense than Lou Dort or J.Crowder. You can have the same level of defense from a much cheaper contract.
The difference between those cheap 3&D players and Jrue Holiday suppose to show on offense. However, in modern NBA it does not show for most of the teams.
In Dallas, Jrue Holiday would not be a better option than Doncic to run the offense. In NOP, Ingram-Zion did not need Jrue on offense. So effectively, Jrue Holiday type of guards drop down to a 3&D player. As a 3&D player, they're not elite defenders to Kawhi/Lebron stopper. They're not great 3pt shooters. Their value as an asset is overrated.
Look at J.Richardson. You can sub him with another 3&D player without losing his "guard" skills for offense. Jrue is much better than him but their contribution does not justify the $30m+/year contract.
Jrue, JRich, Rubio, Lonzo Ball are the first defensive PG's comes to my mind. They are not offering too much winning basketball by their own. They can function in a good team like Rubio did in Jazz but they cannot elevate a team. Jrue's performance with NOP was prime example for that.
