I don’t think many Wolves fan think a KAT trade is realistic at this point in time.
1. Rosas will want time to evaluate how Towns and Russell fit together, since they’ve only played five games together. Plus now he’d want to see how they look together under offensive guru Chris Finch.
2. MIN is not in danger of KAT asking out, because he is locked up for four years, and they would just say, “no.” It should be noted that Towns continues to say he wants to build the franchise here. Team control is a big deal for a team like MIN who isn’t a free agent destination. Remember, on the verge of getting a super-max with a potential second All-NBA award, KAT could have signed any extension he wanted, and he chose the full five-year guaranteed deal, without the player option for the final season that stars typically request.
3. Towns trade value isn’t likely to drop for a while, and trading now is probably trading low. After an injury and Covid, people have forgotten how good KAT is, and how injury-resistant he has been. He was starting to play better defense at the beginning of this season, and that is too early to be reflected in his trade value. If this is for real, Towns playing even average defense is immensely valuable. Finally, the length of KAT’s deal means a team will get plenty of KAT left, even if he was dealt a year from now.
4. MIN has already spent a lot of equity into making this Towns team. Rosas already started a rebuild, around Towns, last year. Rosas got rid of all but two of the Thibs roster, and filled up on lots of youth. That included sending out Wiggins and locking in D’Angelo Russell on a max deal here. Finally, this year there is uncertainty whether they own their pick. Hell, they are losing already even if they knew they were getting it, so there is no extra value from trading a star now to get a better pick in the upcoming draft.
Any of these reasons is more than enough to squelch a Towns trade right now. Combined, a KAT deal now is entirely unrealistic.
