Just growing pains. He's too inexperienced to help a team trying to win. Can't guard anybody.

He's unfortunate in a sense, because he was drafted by a contender. If he was just a role player, with one of outstanding skill like Thybulle, he'd be in the lineup. But Maxey is a playmaker, and he isn't good enough yet, to be a net positive against any team that's locked in on him.

I Agree.

Joe could crack the rotation earlier than Maxey even if he is a player with less potential.
Sixers have to make a decision in two weeks or this summer: would they spend time and resources to develop Maxey (so to give him minutes with less chance to win as a team) or would they let antoher team to develop the guy (so trade him)?

It will be an interesting answer

You obviously don't trade him. Working on a jumper is something players work on during the offseason. He just needs to come into next season being able to space the floor then he'll crack the rotation.

I think it depends on who becomes available. Like how the Sixers weren't actively trying to trade Ben Simmons and then Harden became available.

If there's a player that moves the needle and/or could be a good fit with a good contract then it makes sense to consider it. Not sure what that move would be though...

Or just develop the creators we already have in-house so we won't have the same problem 3 years from now.

Definitely a good point and would definitely rather go this route than trading for a rental or a half-*** shot creator.

It’s unfortunate short term but realistically he needs to learn to do the role player stuff too. Might force him to work harder fill out the other parts of his game so he can get on the court.

Never hurts to watch a bit and right now the way the team is playing, watching how they defend and play together is pretty valuable stuff, plus when Maxey gets in late in games there is no loss of bounce or vigor in his game. The kid seems mature and from all we have seen is a very hard worker and eager learner. He will get his chances here and there, next year is when we will hopefully see the first of several big jumps from him after a season on the bog squad and a full summer to work on things as a pro.

He does have a ton of stuff to improve on. Makes me wonder if it might cap his potential at being a spark off the bench kind of guy. Which would still be good for where we drafted him.

I think Morey loves Maxey, he sees potential in him and he is in Sixers long-term plans. I think Morey wants to be in the Sixers organisation for a long time, and so does Maxey.
I don't think Maxey has that much value in the league compared to the potential that Morey sees in him.

Too early.

But right now he reminded me of Cameron Payne. I can still remember how OKc fans have a similar assumption on Payne with how we view Maxey.

My position now is:
40% = peak jeff teague
60% = slightly above cameron payne

Keep eyes on the long game. Maxey is going to be showing signs of excitement in year two and be a bonafide bench assassin by year three.

If Maxey's jumper improves he will be a good player for us. He's a good slasher( and he's deceptively fast) with a really good floater. I think he's a good passer too.

I know the sample is small, but i think he made his last 4 3's too

It’s crazy because as Sixers fans we’ve barely been able to witness the organic growth drafted players see recently. Embiid was a superstar day one even though he’s obviously more refined in some ways. Simmons more or less same. Nobody that follows the path of being drafted by us just okay and triples their level of play.

I can't wait to see what he looks like next year. There's been pretty frequent references about his work ethic & coachability, which I hope translates to legitimate improvement. I keep having to remind myself that this year's rookies didn't have a normal offseason, training camp, summer league, in-season practices, etc. I think he's still a bit lost when he's on the floor which totally makes sense given his weird & massively accelerated intro to the NBA.

The thing about Maxey that most excites me is how dynamic of a finisher around the rim he is. And idk if the stats reflect it, but my eye-valuation definitely does. He's probably the best on the team already. With or without contact and with either hand. He has the runner in his bag, and strong slashing instincts. If he can add a snake dribble in the lane into his repertoire along with fine tuning his shot he'll be a really exciting player to follow.

Keep in mind Doc Rivers has a history of not playing young guys. He just doesn't trust them.

At this point, I'm glad we didn't move Maxey at the deadline especially for Lowry. I hope he has a future with us. The only way I'd trade him is as part of a package for a star.

You dont see any organic growth because the guys we draft thinks they are bigger than who they really are.

Okafor, Noel, Ben and etc.

The guys who really developed are the one’s who were the underdogs, Jerami, Roco, Woods, TJ and even Embiid.

Best example of all time? Michael Jordan.

Development STARTS with the player.

Look at how Embiid made a jump this offseason. Last offseason he had a drama queen episode that pretty much just sleep walk the season. Then after the bubble when we gave in into his demands, he was a completely different player.

What demands did the organization give into when it comes to Embiid? Not hiring Lue? I'm looking forward to seeing what organic growth Shake and Paul can do going forward. People popo on Shake but he still has room to grow.

By the time Jordan was drafted I don't think anyone thought of him as an underdog. True no one knew how good he could be but underdog. No !!

You are right development starts with the player you have to want to really get better and put in the time and find the right resources that will help you get better. It's not one size fits all.

I might be cherry picking here. But one of the things that I think helped Jerami and TJ improve, obviously being part of the process and getting playing time. But their support system. Jerami has relatives that have made it to the NBA and thrived. He knows and has resources that he could lean on to tell him what to do to get better. TJ's father was/is a basketball coach that instilled in him the attitude of hard work. Both of these things go a long way to getting better.
The Accession of Paul Reed is upon us !

You want it to be one way....but it's the other way.

I do think Maxey will be able to make a jump next year. I believe he needs a full offseason working on his jumper and getting a better understanding of the defense.

I think my only reservation moving forward of his is his lack of vertical explosion which isn't mitigated by absurd length for his height (like Donovan Mitchell). Other than that, his frame, speed, and form on his shot are all there to make a pretty substantial jump imo.
