Depends on if you count Trae getting a ton of assists while being guarded by Payton, Paytons fault or not top.
I could see the logic that despite the poor shooting, he's not locking up Trae if Paytons poor PnR defense allows Trae to rack up easy assists.
(I'm just basing it off assist numbers, haven't fully looked into this theory or anything)
i posted the assists when guarded by Payton too. he didn’t get that much assists. Payton legit did a good job on Trae as much as I hate to admit it. regular season is regular season though. who knows if it will translate over to the post season. hoping Payton locks him up again
He actually did give up a lot of assists per minute, the limited time Payton spent on Trae just made the totals look decent.
In Payton's best game against Trae, the February matchup, Trae was throwing out ~14.5 assists per 36 with Elf on him...in the other two it was ~29 & ~35, aka almost a dime a minute.

Didn't he average some crazy assist numbers per36? I thought I read it was like 20+ or some **** vs Payton
January 4th: 5 assists
February 15th: 2 assists

April 21st: 3 assists
I don't think this is good at all, these are his assist numbers while Payton guards him which was probably not that many minutes.. 5 assists(granted Payton played 29 mins this game so maybe he did guard Trae for a good amount)
but the other 2 he only was on the floor for 24 minutes and 17, and who knows if they were all at the same time Trae was out there.
April 21st: 3 assists per 3.066 minutes; or ~35 assists per 36
February 15th: 2 assists per 4.933 minutes; or ~14.5 assists per 36
January 4th: 5 assists per 6.133 minutes; or ~29 assists per 36
I think those are kind of high assist numbers which shows its bad not good no?
per 36 is pretty useless to me. Payton isn’t gonna be on him for 36 mins so what’s the point of using it? I’ll take him holding Trae to just 33% overall over nothing (which is what we’re used to)
It puts the totals in a little context. Like saying Elf only gave up 3 assists to Trae in this last game sounds pretty good. While saying that Trae was throwing out almost an assist a minute when Elf was defending him, sounds pretty bad & suggests that Trae was shredding Elf and Thibs just didn't leave elf on Trae for long enough for Trae to get more than 3 assists off of Payton.
I appreciate you playing devils advocate on this.
