Our own free agents

Post#1 » by aad » Wed May 26, 2021 2:57 pm

Should we bring any of them back beside diallo and F .Jackson
DSJ
Cojo
Ellington
MacGruder

I personally feel we should let these four walk and just bring back frank jackson and diallo and also lee

Should keep/want to keep; Frank, Saben, and Diallo.

Let walk; McGruder, Joseph and Smith jr

Resign only at minimum; Ellington. Only because we will probably have some veteran shooter on the bench.

I would only brinng Frank Jackson and Saben Lee back, CoJo is not a FA btw, we can waive him and pay only part of his salary.

Depends on the cost, Frank Jackson/Saben Lee/Diallo should be brought back, maybe Ellington on vets min, he's still a useful player to have on the team. I expect Diallo to be the only tricky one, some team may want overpay him.

If we bring back Lee, Diallo, and Frank Jackson there really isn't any room on the roster for Ellington.

If we only bring back two, perhaps there is a spot for Ellington.

Tyler Cook is also fine to bring back, he honestly was better than Sekou. I'm fine either way on him.

We have 17 spots, with two of those being 2 way contracts for 2nd rounders.

Bey-Grant-Stewart-Hayes-‘21 lottery pick
Josh, Sekou, Plumlee, Okafor, Sirvydis

Assuming you let Joseph and McGruder out of their contracts and use two of the 2nds on two way deals, that’s only 12 spots. That’s how I came up with my answer.

Don't we have 3 2nd rounders this year? So 4 incoming players?

Dump Joseph, McGruder, Ellington, and DSJ. Sign Frank Jackson, Lee, Diallo, and retain Cook.

We will continue to have 17 spots (15 on roster + 2 2 way players) It remains to be seen how many will be allowed to be active on game days next year.

We should know in < 5 days whether Corey Joseph is a Piston next season. His contract jumps from 2.4 million to 12.6 million if he isn't waived by June 30th.

Hayes - Lee
Diallo - Frank
Bey - JJ - Sirv
Grant - Sekou - Cook
Stewart - Plumlee - Okafor

Our Lotto pick, #37, #42 & #52

That's 18 dudes...

Even assuming #42 & #52 get the 2 way way treatment we gave Lee we still need to cut one guy.

I vote Okafor

Of course Weaver could always package those 2nds or make trades but as it stands right now I'd bring Diallo back (assuming reasonable price) and upgrade Frank, Lee & Cook.

Frank and Saben are the only ones I’m particularly attached to.

Diallo depends on the price. He didn’t impress me.

I’m in the same boat. I’d be ok with Diallo if it was under 8 mil a year and we traded Josh Jackson. Jackson and Diallo on the court at the same time is painful to watch.

Seems 17 so...

Assume our last 2 second round picks get the 2 way treatment.

That's the roster I want heading into next season.

I think you can play them together, as long as you've got Frank or Sirv out there (or our Lotto pick) with them.

Both are best served slashing so need a shooter with them, preferably multiple shooters tbh

Diallo wasn't that good, and he honestly should be behind Frank Jackson in the rotation.

I wouldn't even give Diallo $5 million per year. Diallo had a couple high scoring games, but Frank Jackson was clearly the better and more efficient scorer.

Saben and frank are the only ones I really want to keep. I wouldn’t mind diallo on a cheap deal but I’m not overly attached to him.

Lee, Jackson, and Diallo. Probably in that order in terms of priority. Everyone is kind of just meh or fillers for a bench without any urgency to sign them

Pretty much the same for me.

As the season progressed JJ stayed pretty much the same player he was and while Diallo showed some flashes he certainly didn't move the needle a lot as one of those guys you kinda want to see stick around, like Saben Lee and Frank Jackson. I wouldn't be broken-hearted if neither of them was around next year, nor would I be upset if both were given another shot next year.

I don't think we saw the best of Diallo, he was better in OKC and came to Detroit off injury, then he got hurt again, which could mean he's injury prone, but I don't know how much of the real Diallo we saw in Detroit.

Diallo's first game or two he looked like Donovan Mitchell but fell off a cliff pretty hard. Maybe he's one of those guys that has it in him, as he's shown in flashes, he just can't sustain it (Rhythm player). I trust Weaver to make the evaluation on his long term outlook.
