Just because it rarely has an affect doesn't mean it's not an advantage. Having a lottery ticket is still better than not having one.
I'm not surprised at all that Blake has managed to find a niche as a solid role player. I don't view it as a "lottery ticket." Casual fans have never given Blake any credit for how skilled he is as a player. They decided that he was "just a dunker" during his rookie year and refused to update their priors since then, no matter how hard he worked on his game. Injuries robbed him of his otherworldly athleticism, but he still has the skills he's developed. I just wish he was back with the Clippers instead of doing this on the Nets.
Despite all that, it's not like his box-score numbers are popping off the screen or anything. People's annual overreaction to the buyout market remains absurd.
