In the minds of most of the voters (the idiots of the Baseball Writers Association of America), Wins and ERA are first and second, with peripheral stats (like strikeouts) getting secondary attention.

If it were up to me, ERA would only be a small factor in voting and Wins would be ignored, but that's because I have common sense and Bill Plaschke doesn't.

So then what the hell would you base the criteria on?

IMO:

1. ERA
2. K's
3. K/BB Ratio
4. WHIP
5. Wins

The type of stuff you just mentioned excluding wins, just not in that particular order. Plus IP (which helps make a big case for Sabathia) and some sabermetric stats for good measure.

And let me reiterate that this is what I would use, so I can accept some disagreement. But the BBWAA's focus on wins is just idiocy.

I forgot about IP. That should cement the award for CC this year, unless he completely blows up in the last 2 weeks.

Clearly strike outs are important

Groundball outs mean nothing

I think you could make a case for Beckett as well. He's right there with CC in ERA and Whip and has an advantage in baa. Of course CC does have 35 or so more innings. Bedard would have been right there too if he had not gotten hurt.

its kind of hard that three of the best pitchers are on awful teams (santana, bedard and haren) or we might already know and the fact there is a different pitcher leading every statistical category also makes it kind of tough

i dont even know who i would vote for....if pressed, i guess i would give it to carmona because he has the lowest era, 17 wins and gives a quality start 80 percent of the time

i dont know, its tough

Halladay should ask for a trade. He's pitched into at least the eight (with three complete games, including one in 10IP) in his last eight starts, with an ERA around 3, but only won one game. If his team actually gave him run support, he'd be around 20 wins. The scary part is, he didn't pitch well initially after he returned from the injury. He missed four starts too. He could have 22 wins right now.

I would love to watch Holladay pitch in the playoffs, such a shame a great pitcher is stuck on a garbage team.

They look at

1. Wins
2. ERA

Thats basically it. Its a stupid way to see who the best pitcher is but whatever.

They can look at anything that they want. It's up to each individual to decide who deserves it.
