The media will hammer away on questions like, "will male players play for a woman?" or "will male players play for a homosexual?" Or counter arguments that many Black players come from strong matriarchal backgrounds and a MORE accepting of female leaders than male. And on and on. For me all of that is crap. But the media circus will do their thing.
NBA players want a coach that leads to wins. It is not deeper than that. Hammon has many traits suggesting she will drive a younger team forward. That for me makes her a better fit to Orlando than Portland (Clifford looks to be the kind of coach the Trailblazers need). But is she the best candidate for Orlando? That for me must be the question. With Armstrong and Vanterpool basically displaying the same traits as Hammon, it will come down to coaching-style intangibles I would think. Practice regimes, expectations for roster adjustments, philosophies on use of assistant coaches and interactions with trainers. i.e. all the little stuff that fills the day to day work of a head coach.
What I would think is that PBO Weltman has only one criteria for the next coach: can you lead this team forward? Being a homosexual female will lead to a lot of news stories about two-glass ceilings though, when she gets her NBA gig. And I am confident she will get a job, if not this year, then next.
