Ultimately legacy is whatever is believed about a particular player and in many ways unrelated to how well or poorly they actually played. It's all a fun story people tell to create something from nothing. Players don't damage anything by losing at some point in their career when they've proven so much, Lebron's career wasn't damaged by losing in the first round this year, Curry's wasn't by missing the playoffs, etc. Any player who's playing at this high a level has proven themselves and its all about a story people want to create to entertain themselves.
Yep. Dirk always had the best response when he was still playing and people asked him about his legacy---I don't worry about all that, I just play hard and try and help my team win and when I'm done I can enjoy a beer and think about it then. Nothing to be gained in worrying if he was the best Euro ever or best Mav ever(both trivially easy yeses) or if he was top 20 or top 15 or whatever.
And while 2011 changed his for a lot of people, many of us already knew what he was.
