Are we 100% sure we won this? Chandler wasn’t bad when he got time

He was pretty bad. Peaked in his first game. I've never seen someone get to the basket and miss layups like him.

Cap space? No.
Luxtax space? Not much. Just $600K in room.
We may be parting with Mathews. But I suspect we go into the season a couple of mil above the luxtax and we trade Harrell at the deadline once Bryant is fully healthy.

If we want him, we can sign him as a free agent next year. San Antonio won't be issuing a qualifying offer.

I think we're only $600k below the tax. I suppose Ted would go over that line for, say, Kawhi; other than that, I suspect we won't add any more salary.Benjammin wrote:Do the Wizards have cap space to use some of the MLE or biannual exception and still be under the luxury tax line? Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Chandler's got talent, good slasher, but he was pretty shooting-challenged.
Where from here? We keep Kuzma? or try to trade him elsewhere?
There were some rumors that Minnesota liked him.

This. He might have benefitted by being literally the only SF in uniform, but he didn't look like an NBA player to me.Halcyon wrote:CobraCommander wrote:Are we 100% sure we won this? Chandler wasn’t bad when he got time

With Brooklyn, LA and Golden State so high above the tax, the redistribution payment is around $10M this year. So there is a massive incentive to stay below the tax line.
I had thought we would be okay going a couple mil over the luxtax with the assumption that we will get under at the Trade Deadline, but now I'm not so sure.
Maybe we will still find a way to move Bertans or Kuzma in the next week or so. (Kuzma can only moved by himself. He can't be packaged with anyone.) If not, we won't be resigning Mathews.

I imagine Harrell at the deadline would be moved to make space perhaps.

Five forwards who need minutes is one too many.

Re: Wizards set to acquire Spencer Dinwiddie
In hindsight, that Aaron Holiday acquisition is looking pretty bad. If we refrained from doing it, we would have had a TPE large enough to absorb all of Dinwiddie's salary, and thereby save whatever 2nd round pick we just sent to San Antonio.
So basically, Aaron Holiday, with just 1-year remaining on his contract, cost us Hutchison, 9 slots in the draft (from 22 to 31), and a future 2nd round pick.

It's a gamble. Teams will know how much money we will save by getting under the tax and will drive a hard bargain.

As you are someone pointed out, it's not the paying of a small amount of luxury tax that is significant but losing out on the almost ten million paid out as a non-luxury tax team.

I'm sure you just forgot Gafford because he's well in there.

Gafford also. I don't think I've ever seen a Wiz roster this deep. Assuming everyone stays Unseld has his work cut out for him (in a good way).

So just to clarify no first round picks were involved in this trade?

Re: Wizards set to acquire Spencer Dinwiddie
I'm still a bit worried about our backcourt depth. Can they still sign Mathews and Neto or is that basically impossible now?

so with dinwiddie's injury history, a quality backup pg is needed. so i can see another deal happening.

Re: Wizards set to acquire Spencer Dinwiddie
So right now its:
G Dinwiddie ... Holiday ... (Winston)
G Beal ... Caldwell-Pope ... (Mathews)
F Avdija ... Kispert
F Hachimura ... Kuzma ... Bertans ... Todd
C Gafford ... Harrell ... Bryant
Harrell would fill a need short term with Bryant possibly not ready to start the season.
The Kuzma/Bertans situation will probably be resolved soon.
