I think Nurse likes ball handling and playmaking in the Starting Lineup. Gary Trent is not necessarily known for either of those things. Gary Trent will still get a lot of minutes regardless. Kind of like the Jordan Clarkson role
Goran Dragic / Malachi Flynn
Fred VanVleet / Gary Trent Jr.
OG Anunoby / Scottie Barnes / Yuta Watanabe
Pascal Siakam / Chris Boucher
Khem Birch / Precious Achiwa
Yep - thats my depth chart as well.
I've done a 180 on Dragic.. going from 'theres no way we will keep him' to 'he actually checks the boxes for the Raps need, keep him!'
The guy is a crafty ball handler / offense initiator, can score for himself and has range. This is exactly what our current roster needs, so why move him unless Masai can get a younger piece that he likes / wants to invest in? If that piece dopesnt exist, then role with Dragic for a year, evaluate the roster, and see what next off season brings for tinkering.
Keeping Dragic for one year is not a horrible situation and can actually lead to some positive surprises. Dragic is playing for a contract after all, and may actually ball out... keep in mind, Dragic is a baby step removed from being the leading scorer on the Heat within their Finals run. Whos to say he cant be a 18/5/4 guy with us in his contract year, while offering some veteran leadership along the way? Heck, If Goran really balls light out, I can see Masai wanting to keep on a 2 year extension.. he is kinds a slightly worse Lowry.
