High school, college, summer league, he’s always been this speed. He was only explosive in the draft combine unfortunately.

He looked pretty explosive last night. Beat guards off the dribble for dunks and covered point guards the whole length of the floor.

I do feel Scottie should be finishing stronger on certain plays. I think that's going to backfire on him when the intensity of the game picks up in the regular season.

His lack of explosion at times is perplexing, but after scouring and scrutinizing his high school, college, and summer league footage, I've come to the conclusion that he's just not that guy who you throw lobs to. Or will rise up and slam on people out of nowhere.

It's something to keep an eye on to see if he can develop that, but he doesn't really need it as part of his game to be effective.

He's an unusual player and I think those of us who watched summer league will not be surprised by certain things. He's going to wow with the spectacular plays, like saving a ball going out of bounds and firing a pass to Achuiwa for the dunk. But then he'll underwhelm you when he rushes a layup and misses instead of going up strong to slam it. I suspect that he's not as good at jump-off 2 feet as he is 1. And I think he might have some weakness in his range of motion. Maybe he needs to do full-range squats to shore up some weaknesses in his legs.

Overall he does so many great things and helps the team win in so many ways, you'll live with some of the warts. I'm hoping he can get those things tightened up though. His mid-range shot is looking like a weapon already.

He's more of an orchestrator than a finisher at this point. But he can absolutely get better there and I expect that with reps and NBA training he will.

You guys talk about slow like you didn't watch DeRozan. Scottie isn't slow.

idk where this slow on his feet stuff is coming from. He guards opposing guards at the point on attack. Like am I watching the same dude?

I dont see the Draymond comp tbh..more like San Diego state version of Kawhi imo

I wouldn’t exactly say that Scottie’s slow but he seems to need a full head of steam to really explode to the basket. Not as impressive athletically from a stand still.

I don’t see either comparison. Kawhi was a strong defender and couldn’t shoot 3s while Barnes already has better court vision and passing ability than Kawhi ever had. Kawhi was also one of the best 6-7 rebounders I have ever seen. Barnes also looks bigger on the court to me.

The Draymond comparison doesn’t make any sense to me. Draymond has the body of a PF, Barnes doesn’t and moves more fluently on offense and will be able to score easier. On the other hand Draymond is a much better post defender than Barnes projects to be.

This is exactly where it’s coming from. If he was just guarding forwards, this wouldn’t come up. It’s just difficult to stay in front of a guard when you are 6-9.

Out of 55 participants at the combine he was 7th in lane agility and 2nd in the shuttle run. He isn’t blazing fast in pure speed but he’s very quick on his feet.

He was joking. Maybe Scottie dunks it when Fred is above 40% shooting lol

Barnes sorta reminds me of Josh Smith if he actually tried, but with less explosion.

I don't see Kawhi at all either. Feels more like Draymond on steroids or a less athletic Iggy.

He's not slow, however, he does appear to be selective about when he turns the speed/explosiveness on.

Scottie really needs to work on his conditioning, currently he is an 18 minute player - max. His calling card is defensive intensity, put pressure on by running/filling the lanes and play making. Two of those skills are dropped once he's winded - and as we saw, kid gets winded pretty damn fast lol. Hopefully these preseason runs just show him how far he needs to go in this department.

I'm good with 18-20 minutes stretched out to over an 82+ game schedule.

Not a bad kind of comparison. We were all expecting Demar to be like Carter/Wade/TMac athletically, but he was more Michael Finley. Scottie looks more in that area, needs a very clean runway and space.

Which DeRozan did you watch? He’s always had a very quick first step.

Lol derozan needed runway and space? So how does the majority of his buckets come 1 vs 1
